Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
Air density changes with temperature, thus the need for an IAT.

Your fwi sucking in air only from the fender, through bends in piping with slightly colder temps, blower heats up air anyway.
OR
You run right off the throttle body, completely non-restrictive, no bends or anything, air getting pulled in is warm, blower heats up air anyway.
Thanks man, I think I'm gunna go this route then and sell my FWI.

Thats what i thought is it had some kind of reason for being there. So wouldnt being just ziptied out in the open give it improper readings? I would think it would need to be somehow incorporated into the actual airflow of the intake like normal to get proper readings allowing the engine to run optimally? Correct?

It really wouldnt matter because the air temp would be the same whether its in the intake or outside of it. Your still sucking in the air inside the engine compartment. :th_scratchhead:
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
Ha right. Didn't think of it that way for some reason. Good point thanks for clarification.

no, it affects the timing tables. it doesnt really do all that much once you tune the car to run whatever timing you want though.
i had it zip tied right next to the cone filter, so it was probably getting damn near what the actual intake air was at.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
Ah ok. i dont yet understand how all the sensors an stuff work. i can replace them an fix broken things and now build a 3800 but as far as tuning and exactly what all the sensors do and affect and what all their #s mean i have not yet learned. Hoping to in the future though.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
I had mine zip tied for A LONG time...plus the fact when it is colder IMO it helps it being outside anyways. Maybe that is just me.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
So just ziptie it onto the filter?
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
here is where mine was:

you can see it on the left hand side where the filter meets the throttle body.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
I guess that's how I'll probably set it up then, thanks bio.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
I was going to add it to the base of the filter with a short piece of pipe but I guess it doesnt matter since the air inside the cone at that location will be same as air outside...
I got me a cone today and will slap that sucker on tomorrow....
thanks for the ZZP chart....that was exactly what I needed to see
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
Installed open cone today. You guys are right. The whine is addicting.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
Ok. I am not home so I can't install the iac sensor so its just dangling for now but I am now getting a service engine soon light. Is that the iac or do I need to reset the computer? Or will it go off after it learns the new intake?
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
check engine light went off so its ok...but I am going relocate the iac into the airstream today so its at least halfass doing its job
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
the IAC shouldnt create an SES unless its unplugged or gone because it melted on your headers.
Re: has anyone dynoed the different intake types?
haha..yes it was unplugged at one point. all is fine now. it is inserted in the 4 inch pipe I have before the cone. thanks
