I have an '01 GT and it has that wide body side molding that runs along the bottom of the doors. The piece on the driver's door is starting to come off at the trailing edge. I looked at it quick and it looks like it attaches with some sort of clip system, but I can't tell if the clip just popped out of position or is actually broken. I don't want to just pry at it without knowing how it comes off.

Anybody know how that trim piece attaches or comes off?

they have clips that clip into the door. They have most likely broke. You can pry it off but try not to bend the molding or it will crease in it. Then go buy new clips and snap it back on.
