Was on the way home from work today on a back road, running a constant 50-55 in third, just below 2000 rpm. Engine started kind of missing, chugging, not sure how to explain. Gave it some gas and it was fine, dropped back below 2000 and held steady and it started again, shifted to 2nd where the rpm was higher, and again, it quit. Slowed down to below 2000 in 2nd and it started again. Seems to be just below 2000 and holding steady where it is doing it.
Had a similar problem on my Jeep and it was one of the O2 sensors.
Car hasn't given a code, yet. Just wondering what it could be with no code? Any ideas?

BTW, 98 GTP w/ Auto Transmission

Changed the fuel filter, looked as though it needed it, and still have the same issue,,,,with no code.

    Spark Plugs?
    Sensor?
    Anything?

Please, someone give me some advice.

I can look and tell that the front 02 sensor has been changed, but not the one behind the cat.

Its hard to tell if that is a transmission issue or an engine issue. No check engine light so my only suggestion would be to see if there is anyone in the area that could go along for a ride with you that has a scanner they could hook up to the car.

Im not sure if a MAF sensor would do this. Its possible to be a throttle position sensor but Im not real confident on that one as a TPS issue would cause some shifting issue. Ive not known the crankshaft position sensor to cause those kinds of symptoms and if the cam position sensor went out I would think it would be hard to start or possibly not start at all.

Thats all I have at the moment given the info you have provided.

All that said, however, if you do not know a tune up has been done on it in a while, its always best to start with the simple things like plugs, wires, new air filter and so on. The O2 sensor after the catalytic converter would not cause that issue as its only there to confirm the catalytic converter is functioning properly.

I'm getting more convinced, considering it hasn't set a code, that it's not a sensor. The plug wires and boots look pretty bad and I am sure the plugs aren't much better, so the next thing I am doing is changing both.

Pretty sure it's not the tranny, as I have been having no issues with that even with the hesitating.

Then start with the simple stuff then and see where that goes and what that does. The first thing I do when I buy a used car is I go from front to rear on it with maintenance, fluids, filters, tune up and so on. That way I know its done and I have it all on my schedule then.

OK. drove it again today and here is what I observed: It seems to be only in 3rd and 4th gear and holding the throttle steady or VERY lightly accelerating below about 2500-2600 rpm. If it gets above that, it's fine. It doesn't do it from a standing start if I accelerate a little more aggressively, not even enough to get the boost gauge lighting up.

All that said, it's hard to know if it is doing it in 1st or 2nd as you get past 2500 pretty quickly, even lightly accelerating. I did notice it shifted a little oddly going from 2nd to 3rd a couple times, not every time.
