I start the car.... It makes a horrible whistling noise and coolant leaks down the side of the engine on to the transmission. Then it abruptly dies..... Is it a head gasket or something else.

where is the coolant coming from? the whistle could be a big vacuum leak. is your oil milky?

The oil is mixed with coolant, so yes it's milky. It's hard to tell exactly where it's leaking from, but it's only on the driver's side. Now, my evap lines and my vacuum lines are broken and I did post for new ones cause I can't seem to find them anywhere. Would that really cause that leak?

It's most likely LIM gaskets. They're much more common to fail than the head gaskets and will give the symptoms you describe if they're totally gone.

I'll give it a try again tomorrow. When I reseal them, should I put the RTV in more spots then the corners and the bolts?

Standard labor rates and it's a 5-6 hour job according to the service manuals. Adds up quick.

All you need to use RTV for is at the corners where the gaskets meet with the block.

It's not that anybody is "slow". There are standards for how long a job takes. It's all in a database somewhere. Regardless of how long it really takes, the amount of hours they charge you is based off this standardized info.

But the actual mechanic doesn't have to buy all the tools, lifts, building rental/mortgage, and keep the lights on either.

Labor rate here was $65 last time I checked, that was a few years ago, now I got the warranty I dont have to worry about cost just downtime.

The oonly reason I go to the dealership mechanic now is the the trust factor and the fact that I know a highly trained person was turning the wrenches on my pig. That and pure documentation. Price sucks but thats why you befriend folks at the dealership, hell it helps even more when a family member is a high ranker at the stealership too.

Those book times are a *****, I remember working that kind of life. 5-6 hour job in real time was 2-3 MAX

Well, I know what the problem is now. It is the head gasket after all. I started the car and it stayed on long enough for me to get out and see the coolant and oil leaking seeping out of the bottom of the head. Oh well. At least I know what's wrong now.
