So I am new to this. I don't own the grand prix, my boyfriend does. What happened was that I had plugged in the seat cover heater into the outlet and made the mistake of leaving it plugged in. So obviously the battery has been drained. But when he went to put his key in the ignition it was jammed. It took us awhile to get the key out (nothing broke during the process). We tried boosting the car and were able to get basic power (lights and power locks) but the steering coloum is locked, and it seems that the ignition is as well. Like, we cannot turn the key in the ignition at all. We aren't sure where to begin or what to do. We are currently charging the battery.

Have you tried moving the wheel around while turning the key? Sounds like the wheel is just locked.

Never heard of that before. Like he said there may be pressure on the wheel in either direction when it is locked preventing the key from being turned.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^ NONE OF THAT!

like said above. if the key wont turn, chances are the steering wheel is locked and will need turned, then twist the key.

The key will need power to get back into the off position. there should be a key release area under the steering column by the key. it is a little round(plastic cover) that can be taken out with a flathead screw driver. once it is out of the way, stick the screw driver up the hole... you will feel it hit a button. then simply turn the key off and the khey will come out.

hope all will be well once the battery is charged!

If the battery is dead and there is a key in the ignition you can't take the key out unless u hit the lock release button under the ignition like UrLosn stated above...

on my 98, when the weather got cold, my key would not release, I found that little button on my own, but now the button is the only way I can release it, I did not know it was eletric... is there some sort of fix for that? Maby loose wires, or a fuse?

Remove that whole white thing. You will be able to take your key out in any gear then. Just make sure you are in park.

I haven't been able to get my key out for 2 years now. I also have to use the release button by the gear shift to get it out of park.

    Are these two happenings related?

Occasionally, the ignition will release the key, but thats once in a great while.
