Howdy. I have a 1998 3.8L G.P. Bought her new, just hit 197,000 miles. Aside from the normal wear and tear items she is solid. Never leaked oil until now. Appears to be coming from the valve covers. Here's my question(s). How many miles can I expect to get until the valve cover gaskets go bad? Can someone give me the step by step and any pointers in doing the job myself? (I've got tools THANKS!

your valve cover should be under a recall. is the leak coming from the front or back one?
    My car doesn't leak oil,
    It marks it's territory.

The recall is only on the GTP, the OP didn't specify.

If you got 197K out of a set of valve cover gaskets, you're already way over the average. Are we talking about an L36 (naturally aspirated) or L67 (supercharged) engine, the writeup will be different.

L36. The leak is coming from the rear valve cover. On a side note, she burns appx one qt oil every 5000 miles. At appx 2500 mi I add appx 1/2 qt. The last time I did this I overfilled her a bit (like maybe 1/8" over the full mark on the dip-stick). Anyways...could this have been the problem?
