Am I missing something when looking at fuel pumps and sending units? On Rock Auto the sending unit is just about as expensive as the entire fuel pump assembly. Why would I buy the sending unit over the assembly? This is for my 97 GT. I'm trying to fix the variable level gas gauge feature to a more accurate and steady level indicator.

Years ago I bought just the sending unit for like $50-60 from Dorman I think, they are probably still around that same price.

If you did go the pump route don't buy the cheapest pump assembly either, only get the new Delphi pump or you'll be doing it again soon.
