So my steering rack has been leaking like a sieve for awhile, from what I assumed was the boot. I have taken a closer look and this line on the back side of the rack is leaking from where the line enters the fitting. I’ve tried many different sizes of O-ring and nothing seems to seal this. When fluid is full the rack functions fine and it seems silly to replace the rack when this one fitting is the only thing leaking. But if I have to, I’ll just replace the rack.

Has anyone dealt with this fitting and what might seal it?

those o rings are super small. might be best to replace that line. it will have a new o ring on both ends.

This is one of the lines on the rack itself - it does not go to the pump.

well damn, junk yard time maybe? snag one used, or the whole rack.

I’ve kind of resigned myself to just replacing the rack, even though it’s just this fitting that’s stopping this one from working. So frustrating.

So, I actually have been able to find some hard line replacements — fittings and some braided steel lines. Looks like folks replace these lines on older cars fairly regularly. I just can’t see replacing the whole rack just because this line is leaking. If the actual seals under the bellows were leaking, yeah. I’m going to stop by Fastenal and try to get a fitting and see about getting this fixed.
