I bought a 2007 GXP last month and am having issues finding the cause of a shake in the front
I thought it was related to broke motor mounts, so I left it at the shop while we were on vacation
I just got back from a cruise and picked up the car from the shop. He replaced the motor mounts that were bad bottom and dogbone.
He said the rest of the suspension looked fine from a quick look.

But it still has the shake when accelerating. It is worse when 2 people are in it. Anyone have any other ideas? I do not think it is in the tires/wheels because it is smooth when coasting downhill in neutral .

did the shop test drive it? if so never go back.

likely bad axles, shop should have known to check them first. as your description is spot on for them.

No, but that is my fault. The owner of the shop is a personal friend. His shop is really a RV repair shop/ He was doing the work free as a favor and I was in a hurry to get it back and he had just finished it when I got there. He had been sick and gotten behind on work. We had to have both vehicles the next day. He is going to look at it again when I get it back to him. I just wanted to get some opinions here from people with experience with them before I go back. The motor mounts were bad, I know for a fact from watching the engine when the car was put in gear. Replacing them helped it some but not totally.

How big a job is replacing the axles?

not to bad, they can be done in the driveway on a jack stand. worst part i suppose for most is getting them out of the tranny, they have a c clip inside you need to pop the axle out and past it, they can fight a bit if you dont have a good angle with your pry bar. need to push it in, then snap it out in one swift prying move. last time out i used a thin old pry bar with a hook at the end, hung the hook over the axle and then pried on it, took two trys and it was out. and you need a 34 or 36 mm socket for the nut on the hub end of the axle. re tq to 118 fp. the 36mm will work on a 34mm nut, the size changes when you get new axles with new nuts. and you need to pop the ball joint to free up the axle from the hub, or pull the two strut bolts.

being a rv mech, im sure he knows what a bad U joint feels like, same deal, the cv joint has worn out. why it only vibrates when on the gas.

most of the time you can feel it on one side or the other. and the side that vibrates would be the one to change, but it sounds like you need both changed maybe.

Problem fixed. I had my friend/mechanic do it. the boots looked fine but when on the rack he could feel vibration from the driver side axle.
he replaced both because I had bought them and they were not too expensive. The drivers side had a big chunk out of the part that connects to what looks like a ujoint. He said it looked like someone had pulled it apart for some reason, he thought it may have happened when someone put new struts on it. just a bit more stress and it would have snapped. The scary thing is I had been driving it pretty hard (well into the 3 digits speed wise) but I was also turning the TC off and doing burn outs.
She drives like a dream now. I frigginglove this car and would rather drive it than my vette
