Re: No backup lights
The license plate bulbs do work fine.
-Scotty, I think the 04+ might have a different routing. I do not see what you are talking about on my car. I traced the wiring until the rear speaker deck. I need to remove the seat to get to the rest of the harness. I know it runs under the side moldings. Its been too cold and snowy to have the car torn apart. It is supposed to be a bit warmer this weekend.
Is there a switch at the gear selector that triggers the backup lamps? I may remove the center console to check if something there is all gunked up.

Re: No backup lights
theres got to be a plug you you cant take the trunk lid off with out cutting the wires. it could be wrapped in black tape.
if your not seeing the plug, just open the loom up and look for a damaged wire. the damage is where the hinge likely touches the wire loom.

Re: No backup lights
Yup. Would've mentioned to try that if I knew you were using leds and that it started when you swapped bulbs. Leds are light emitting Diodes. Diodes allow electricity to go one way. Therefore, they only work in one direction. Glad you got it working though
