    If you’ve been following my re-build thread in the “Members Rides” section, you’ll know I have a new rack/pinion and new outer tie-rods. I’m about to install the outer tie-rods but not certain about the correct order of operations here. I know an alignment will be required, but first I need to hook everything up. Question is:

    Should I first thread the outer tie-rod to the inner tie-rod, and then put the stem in the knuckle and secure with castle nut?

    Or, should I put the stem in the knuckle first, secure with castle nut, and then turn the inner tie-rod till it connects with the outer one?

    Seems like the first option is best when I tried sizing things up last night, just wondering though.

    Also, isn’t the geometry of the tie-rods gonna change once the wheels are on the ground? Here’s what I mean. The LCA’s and knuckle and just hanging there right now. Once I lower the car to the ground, the LCA’s will go up and sit about even with the sub-frame. I’m assuming the knuckle will rise slightly as well. Will that mess anything up? Will the outer tie-rod be jamming the inner tie-rod into the rack?

    Might be over-thinking this. Let me know. Thanks.

    Just thread the new outer onto the rack and then set it in the knuckle. Tighten it all up and get it aligned. Done. The inner tie rod moves with the knuckle so you aren't jamming a thing.

    Count how many turns it takes to get off on each side. That will get you close.

    Ten-4 on all that. Sounds like I'm over thinking this, when it's really just plug-n-play. I'll count the turns to get both sides even.

    I just saw your earlier assembly thread and noticed you didn't count the old ones.

    I counted but also compared the new Moogs to the old OEM. They were slightly different, long or short I don't remember.

    Adjust the inner locking nut accordingly for the difference and spin them into it. It looks to still be on the inner tie rod from your picture.

    You could always measure the front and back inside(or outside) of the tire.
    Buy the more than 1 time alignment. I bought the 3 year from tires plus and have gotten my moneys worth in a years time. They actually kept coming down in price until I said ok

    Just finished up with this. Pointed both front knuckles to face straight ahead. Threaded the outer rods onto the inner. Both sides took 16 turns and the stem fell right in the knuckle hole. Still a good inch of thread left on the innners. Will post some photos tmrw morning.

    And yeah, I see multiple alignments in my future. I'll see what kinda deal I can score.
