Hey Guys.
I was losing anti-freeze and the mechanic said the intake gasket was leaking. Anyways....My motor is now knocking. pretty bad. Said it would be about $2000 to rebuild my motor. Is this a decent price? Ive found used motors for less but Im tired of problems! Any suggestions? That much Id like to get some more performance than just a stock rebuild

A used 3800 with low miles can be had for 500 dollars.... hell I've found some local for that price with a supercharger. By the time you finish paying a shop to do a performance rebuild you will realize you wasted money on making an average at best car more average.
These transmissions are glass without buying a built one from a company like TEP add that to a 2k rebuild and you're looking at 4000 to have a slightly above average car.
I'll give you the advice that I found last year when I looked into building the GT.

Aka, get an SC motor (stronger internals), turbo it and do an e85 swap.

You are better off with a junkyard motor most of the time.

These cars hate rebuilds. Toss a junkyard motor in it and put some goodies on the motor while it's out

i got way less then 2k in my whole engine set up, including the ic set up pulleys injectors, hell toss the tuner in the mix im still not there lol
used engine for the win 99% of the time. used can be found 300 to 500 most of the time, a shop will charge around 500 to swap the engine. if they are asking a lot more then 500, they dont want to do the job, why the price is so high.

When you do the junkyard motor you do the gaskets and seals while the motor is out so you won't have to worry about it later. Head gaskets should be fine so you don't have to do those. Lim, oil pan, timing cover, rear cover, are all gaskets that will eventually start to seep, it's less work to do it while he motor is out. Felpro makes a gasket kit that's only $200ish. Could do a cam or rockers too while out, again just easier while it's out. There's a nice how to pull a motor billboost style in the how to section to help you out also.
Rebuilds typically don't last on these blocks so you'll be much better off with a junkyard motor.
