My 99 GTP key won't come out of the ignition unless you manually release it. Any body know what the typical causes are for this? My daughter has the car 3 hours away at college and I'm planning to go up next Saturday to fix it.

busted wire in the console to the shiftier some times, or the think in the column broke. you can tell her to cut a straw, or other item, rolled up business card works too, to fit in the hole with the cap on so its pushing the release all the time as a temp fix, or a forever fix.

theres a few threads that cover the wires, console needs to come out.

they can break near the plug, off the end of its pin. some times its easier to get another plug from a jy car and splice the new plug on.

The issue is with the lock cylinder shift interlock solenoid. This is inside the steering column. You can get to this solenoid and remove it and spray it out with clean so that it won't stick. It may also just need to be replaced. Instructions of how to remove this can be found here: http://sparkys-answers.com/2009/09/2002-pontiac-grand-prix-changing.html
