Just when I think my '97 GP with 155K is running well, something else pops up. Recently, I started hearing a loud chirping noise coming from the engine compartment that sounds like a bird we have in this area. The noise is not regular and is not RPM related. Sometimes the sound occurs about every 2 seconds, other times it chirps 3 times in a row, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It's driving me crazy and starting me thinking I should get another engine or just scrap the car. It still runs like new if I ignore the noise. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Remove the belt and see if it's still there.

If not there, you know where to look.

My bet is on one of the idler/tensioner pulleys.
Btw if you could post a video of this sound that would help out a lot.

I would bet its the belt. My car made a chirping sound for a while. A new belt cleared it right up.

Bearings almost always start chirping when they are going bad, and more than likely one of the idlers or a tensioner pulley.

An engine is an engine no matter the size.... I think Dr. Seuss said that... or maybe it was Big Weld....
