I've only found 3" downpipes for the Grand Prix in stainless steel. Does anybody make them in mild steel? Just curious, as this is usually an option for other cars.

I've googled this every way I can think of but only found stainless.

I have not seen any, but I was wondering why you would want one? Factory exhaust systems are typically stainless steel and have been since not long after manufacturers started moving converters closer to the engine, not all but a lot are. Granted it is a 4 series stainless, but it does last a lot longer than mild steel.

An engine is an engine no matter the size.... I think Dr. Seuss said that... or maybe it was Big Weld....

Is that true for '01 Grand Prixs? I haven't looked closely enough at mine to tell, but of course with its age, it wouldn't look like shiny new stainless.

4 series stainless will take on a brownish to tan color when heated and subjected to weather. It is also a series of stainless that is magnetic. In fact most all SST will become slightly magnetic when worked and welded even 316 stainless will become slightly magnetic at a weld joint. I was recently teaching my baby brother about this as he is leaving the Army and was trying to get hired as a welder for some large company as they teach them, but he wanted to be ahead of the class. I had him doing 100% welds on 3/8" material and was able to show him this because he was telling me that a magnet won't stick to stainless. He thought it was actually pretty neat because he put the magnet to both pieces (304) and the rod (316) and it wouldn't stick or even give a hint of any metal present.
