Heading out of town to look at a very clean GTP coupe, 02, 96k miles, rebuilt trans (15k ago, Aamco, still under warranty). Strut towers and rockers good, LIM done, and car is VERY clean.

One thing is bugging me and thats this pic of under the hood:

What's up with that air intake? Looks like a dryer vent on there? Any ideas?

that looks like a wizaired cold air intake that some moron probably paid $250 bucks for from zzp. i bet those are also zzp's $100 overpriced plug wires.

The wizaired was about THE best intake you could buy.

    No joke.

Thanks guys. *ugh* I am NOT a fan of K&N type filters I don't think they provide a high enough level of filtration for street use. I guess I can go back to the stock airbox.

Forgot to ask about this: "3.4 pulley with supporting mods (est. 285hp)," IIRC the underdrive pulley goes on the SC but what "supporting mods" should I be looking for? I think I would go back to the right size wires too so they can be routed under the cover where they belong. Maybe I'll wear my forum T-shirt and look like a GP boss....

at minimum the basic 3.4 pulley setup would have an exhaust upgrade...headers or 3 inch downpipe with a zzp powerlog. colder range plugs (autolight 104's) , a cone intake, like whats on there , and usually a 180 thermostat. . 1.9 rockers would be a sweet bonus.
get rid of the cover , it holds in heat. the stock ac delco plug wire are much more reliable. the intake is fine it's just expensive overkill but will still perform better than stock.
    oh and reprogrammed pcm

EHB, thanx for the info, what's your opinion of this mod? From what you're describing it sounds like a speed shop did the PCM program. I guess I need to know all what was done so i use the right parts at maintenance time. Do you think this led to the trans rebuild?

the pcm would need reprogrammed if they put a smaller supercharger pulley on and did the supporting mods. you can buy an aftermarket pcm with a basic tune to get you by from zzp, overkill motorsports , or a few other places ,we call these canned tunes...kinda one size fits all... or you can get an in car custom tune , which is somebody sitting in your car and making changes to your pcm based on the feedback he's getting from the car. that is the best way to tune.
a transmission upgrade isn't necessary until you get around 350 WHP , but some people like to install shift kits to get better shifting and may extend the life of the tranny. . the trannies that came stock are prone to problems
i'd leave that airbox on there. i just wouldn't pay that kind of money for one , but if my car came with it, i'd leave it...or sell it. most of us here just run an open cone with no box..

outside of getting the right spark plug , everything is standard. these cars came with iridium plugs. they are good plugs and can last for 100,000 or so in stock trim. once you put on a smaller supercharger pulley , you increase the heat in your combustion chamber, so you need a plug that doesn't get so hot ... like a copper 104....never put a platinum plug in a supercharged car.

read this and get a better understanding of a tuned pcm...

I'm up early for a 2 hr drive to see the car at 7:30 am before work. So I'm looking for larger exhaust, hard to tell if the PCM, plugs, and t-stat were changed or not. In any case it sounds like it needs to run hi-test gas. Hope he's not selling because the mods screwed the motor up....

I assume if it runs good and feels fast then the other mods were made. Worst case I can take it back to stock.

Car looks pretty well cared for though

oh hell yes...NEVER put anything less than 91 in a supercharged car... use the highest octane you can find.
first ask him if it's the stock supercharger pulley which is a 3.8 , if it's smaller just look at the front exhaust manifold. you should see a front stainless steel header or a powerlog which is pretty much a front header. then ask what plugs and thermostat he's running and if its a tuned pcm and if so who tuned it.

rust hides very well on these cars thanks to the body molding. the rocker panels and the strut towers is where your concern should be. unfortunately the only way to really see it is by looking under the car under the door area , and lifting the carpet in the trunk. also pay attention to the gas cap area , also lift the lid open and look around the gas cap , all these cars rust there .

it might serve you well to read thru these threads...

If you look at the pic it has a zzp mps on it. He said it was a 3.4. I would ask for more pics of the engine, tell him you want to see down the front side of the engine.

Thanks, I already passed up a 98 GTP here locally because the LR strut tub was almost gone through. I bough '01 and '98 GT sedans for both of my daughters, and over the years wound up doing LIMs on both, front suspension, oil pan on the '98, etc. Many thnks to all the guys here on the forum for helping me along.

Now kids have moved out and I am missing having a GP in the driveway, so started looking around. Generally don't like buying anything modded, but there are getting hard to find with under 100k miles and in good shape. The wheel well liners on the 01+ went a long way to fixing the strut bucket rust in the rears.

I was focused on the air intake and missed this in the description:

"3.4 pulley with supporting mods (est. 285hp),"

91 gas is the highest you can get around here and hoping the mods didn't kill gas mileage too much, but I do love a fast car

Mods don't usually kill gas mileage on these cars, a heavy right foot does though. My 97 with headers, cold air intake, overdrive balancer and 3.5 pulley still got about 30 mpgs down the highway.

your right foot will kill your fuel mileage way more than the mods...lol
if the owner was willing to part with $250 for that intake setup and $100 for those plug wires... i doubt he skimped on anything else.

Kind of surprised it doesn't have MSD coils too.
