I have emails out to several manufacturers to get some pistons made specifically for the L36 engines. Obviously these will work on the other engines as well as long as the correct rods are used. I believe the pistons are slightly shorter on the L36 engines to compensate for the longer rods that they use. L36 uses 5.760" rod versus the 5.640" rod for the FI engines. As long as you are keeping the crown below the deck you are ok, but keep in mind that shorter compression stroke will raise the compression. As long as you tune, tune, tune you will be fine! With proper tuning the L36 rods can handle all the power you throw at it. So here are the specifics
L36 style forged pistons
.020 (.5mm) overbore (gross 3.82)
designed for 5.750" rods
Flat top (0cc) to raise compression closer to 10:1 to give some more HP (this is dependant on other factors, total bore, stroke, compressed head gasket thickness, combustion chamber volume, head gasket bore, deck height, and piston dish volume. To give you an idea i am going to have 3.82" bore, 3.4" stroke, 0cc pistons, .054" gasket, 3.84 head gasket bore, -.020 deck height, and 65cc combustion chamber...this nets 9.93:1 compression ratio. Properly tunes I will run 89 octane only because i will have the pre-ignition and detonation severely on lockdown.
price will include pins and locks and hopefully rings as well.
I will give prices once I have an idea of how many people I have, ideally i would like to get 240 units made in order to get the best prices.
And yes i know we can get Diamond, Ross, and JE pistons, but they are designed more for the FI engines with lower compression and cost a lot of money. I am hoping to get a much better price. If you are interested or have questions ask below.
Thanks for your consideration!
