I like the chime in the 97 and 98. All the "newer" ones are high pitched and the old ones sound better to me. Can one accomplish changing the chime? I saw you can somehow get rid of it so you gotta be able to change it right?

like the key left in the ignition chime?
Yeah like when you put the key in and have the door open it dings. Im looking for the 97-98 chime. Is that possible. And what would the owners manual say. I feel like it wouldnt be useful...
Well.. in other cars, I've changed when headlights flash, if the horn beeps, how the doors lock. Many many cool little feature type things that are able to be changed. All in the owners manual.
Reading can be quite enlightening.
no idea....
I may be wrong but I believe that box where the chime hides is called the MALL module. Not sure. But what I do is just open it up and unplug the speaker. A true hack could probably change the audio file it plays, but I doubt changing the speaker would change much. I reckon you could put a cotton ball over the speaker cone to muffle it somewhat. I can't stand chimes period so I unplug.
Still didn't read that manual did ya?
I might have looked in the FSM's and might know if you can or can't. I might have also read the owners manual for your year. But then... maybe I didn't.
Sorry to be such an ahole. It irks me when folks ask for advice and are unwilling to do any research or work to find the answer.
What does FSM stand for. You ask for help because you have no clue. I thought it would be replacing the entire instrument cluster but that never came up once. I didnt know there was a whole module for it. The owners manual doesnt tell you ****. It tells you about your car. I have read it and the only thing closely related to it is changing the lock and interior light programs. An owners manual isnt gonna tell you how to change a chime in your car
The chime is whats used to communicate with the owner when resetting lighting and security settings. I have to reconnect the speaker to change or reset things. I found no mention of anything that changes the sound of the chime in an '02 owner's manual. An "FSM" is probably a "field service manual", a.k.a. "service manual, chassis manual, shop manual... its the manufacturer's technical reference publication for your specific year and model. For mechanics.
FWIW, the speaker is inside the vertical black box over your left toe when driving. The hush panel will need to be removed to see it, just follow your ear and be careful prying the clips on the box open.
take it apart and stick a piece of gum to the metal disc
If you had the choice of a chime...it in fact would be mentioned in the owners manual. That's why it's called an owner's manual. It does list a few things that you mentioned, apparently not a door chime change.
Some newer cars, do have the ability to change many things like the chime. Usually on the higher end.
Here's a little something I found for you with one quick Google search
