I was wondering if anyone ever had a problem out of their gas gauge floating up and down before. Under acceleration it jumps to full, sitting for a few minutes it eventually floats down to nothing. I've been just comparing the miles driven to gallons used to keep track of it. Is this a common issue with a fix or do I need to just install a new sending unit in it and be done

Sounds like the fuel pump sending unit needs to be replaced.

Fuel level sensor = common GM issue.

^That's a good link! replacing just the sensor should be way cheaper than the whole sending unit.
