    Hey guys
New to the forum. I recently purchased a 2004 Grand Prix for cheap ( 1900 under blue book) . The car has ran great and i was told about the struts needing to be replaced. Well i was online today looking for struts and realize there is several different options. I cant tell if i have the GT1, GT2, or GTP. The engine says 3800, but that doesnt help much. Also, the steering wheel says GP. Any way to tell what model i have?

Another thing, the engine, or something around the engine, makes a popping sound when driving, particularly when turning or shifting. I was told by 3 different mechanics it was the struts. On the car lift, i notice the struts twist and the engines moves a bit when the car goes from park to drive. So im assuming the mechs are right in saying its the struts. Also, there is grease leaking from the top of both struts, dead give away.
Well the past few days, theres a hard knock when going from second to third. I was thinking motor mounts, but all of them were replaced about a week before purchasing the car. Any ideas? Could the struts be causing this problem too?
    Thanks in advance.

Lower mounts may have been replaced, but upper ones are a pain in the ass to press in and out. Any proof they changed them?

Your choice on the struts. FE4 (GXP) won't work, but any of the other choices will work except they HAVE to be 04/05 because they mount different than any other year, unless you want to put new lower control arms in.

As to if you have a gt1 gt2 gtp, if it's gtp it will say on the back and you will have a supercharger. Gt2 is leather interior, 5 button dic, hud, sunroof. Gt1 is the base model with the 3 button dic usually with the cloth. Both gt1 and gt2 are non super charged if I remember correctly. Only gtp were supercharged 04-05

Representing all the N/A out there. Fastest stock N/A you will ever come across.

Essentially GT1 GT2 and GTP do not exist past 05. Just base, GT, and GXP

EDIT: replied to the wrong thread.

GT1/2 were non supercharged, but the rest were optional.

Here is the brochure telling the option for 04/05: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/Misc/b11.jpg

I had a gt2, was cloth, 3 button, no sunroof, no hud, but had widetrack. Showed up with autocheck as gt2 with the vin.

Says it on the dash by the rpms i believe. Think its a wider turning radius.

A little bit retro for you (but still applies to the 2004):

I wouldn't believe and mounts were replaced until you've personally verified them. On the bottom: 1 engine mount, 1 transmission mount; On the top: 2 mounts at the front where the "wishbones" are.

Sounds like your struts are shot. Buy 2 or 4 pre-assembled strut/spring/mount assemblies. Install and then get a professional alignment.

Also check tie-rod ends, the sway bar links, and the sway bar bushings. Check you wheel bearings too (to do this, jack up the car and push/pull on the top/bottom of the tire and if there is any wiggle then you need to replace the bearings/hubs)
