As some of you may know I've been looking into fixing up our 2005 GT Unfortunately my wife was involved in a car accident last week and the car is being totaled. So now we are in the market for a new car. We've found a 2007 GXP online (haven't seen it yet) and have a couple of questions:

    1. How does the GXP compare to the GT. I know the GXP is a V8 but what else is different about it? Does it handle differently? How does the gas mileage compare? How will it handle in the winter?

    2. Are there any issues about the GXP or the 2007s I should be aware of?

    3. When we go to look at it, what things should I be looking for?

    Thanks in advance.

like you said, obviously the v8. however it has a way better suspension set up from the factory, top of the line struts, bigger sway bar, and lower by an inch. the tires are staggered sizes. the fronts are 255's and the rears are 225's. bigger brakes and drilled rotors from the factory.
depending on where you are from, look for rust. i know its a 2007, but still. the main issue with these cars is the transmission. when you drive it, make sure it is shifting smoothly and see if you can get it up to operating temperature. make sure the driver information center works (not an issue normally), but it has a temperature gauge for the transmission on it and it shows how hot its getting. make sure the torque converter isnt slipping when going into overdrive at about 45 mph.
good luck and sorry about your wifes accident. glad shes ok.

Thanks for all the great info! I believe it is a gxp (it says gxp on the dealer website and says it has a V8). To be honest, I'm not sure what the difference between the two is.

Does a gxp need premium gas?

    What is "dod the afm"?

GXP or comp g, or any supercharged car all need premium gas. (supercharged would be GTP, or comp G, or 2006+ GT)
"dod" stands for displacement on demand. the car will shut off 4 cylinders while cruising to save fuel.
"afm" is essentially the same thing- it stands for active fuel management.
do you do a lot of city driving? there can be problems with the torque converter because it would be switching from 4 cyl to 8 cyl a lot and that can wear down on the torque converter.
other things the GXP has standard. it has electric heated leather seats with suede inserts and i think all come with an upgraded sound system called the monsoon system.

It is definitely a GXP (I checked on the website.....says it on the dashboard display in the picture).

Thanks! We live in a far west suburb of Chicago so I'd say we do a mix of highway and city driving. From the CarFax report, it looks like a rental company owned it for the first 13k miles/5 months and then a private party owned it the remainder of the time. It only has 76k miles on it so it's low miles (about 10k a year).

Is the transmission the same that was in out 2005 GT? About $2k for a new transmission if it were to go out, correct? How much to repair torque converter.

How expensive is it to have displacement on demand and active fuel management issues fixed? Is there any way to tell if there are issues with either of these when we test drive?

Overall we had very good luck with our 2005 GT (it had about 130k miles on it). Would you say the GXP is not as reliable as the GT?

I would do a trans fluid replacement, add a shift kit, a bottle of Lucas and a trans cooler. To help the trans.

it all depends on how you drive it too.
its got the same trans except this one is "heavy duty" and it has tapshift. the thing that kills them is the heat. buy a transmission cooler and it should last a while.
you can get a tune to get your dod tuned out, itll keep it in 8 cylinder mode all the time, and i hear that a tune will help you extend the life of your transmission.
overall, i would say there is more of a chance for the transmission going out on the GXP than the other models. some are really lucky some arent, but that goes along with any car on any platform what so ever.
if its JUST reliability you want, maybe go for another GT or a GTP. i think those models are more reliable.
from personal experience, i took a chance and bought a GXP and i still love it. 6 months and no problems.

I bought an 05 GT and within a few months I had to replace the trans. Bought one from TEP and a cooler to go along with it. We don't beat on it as its my wife's dd/kid hauler. Trans temp would hit 221 and start to slip and hard shift.

Thanks! How much is the transmission cooler, a shift kit and a dod tune? Are these things I can do myself? How will these affect performance and gas mileage?

Cooler and kit you can do yourself there are two good write ups. Tune I assume you would need to send out for. To overkill or find someone close to you that knew wtf they were doing

Unless you have HPTuners, you will have to have it tuned. Not sure on cost though. Cooler is easy and something you can do. Grab a shift kit from ebay for cheap.

You can get most stuff pretty cheap from Amazon or Ebay, but here is a great place to check out.
