I'm wanting to do a muffler replacement on my 06. Is there anyone who has done this who can tell me if they had any issues with the computer? I'd like to get something that isn't super loud a cruising speed (highway) but has a growl to it when you get on the gas. Any recommendations?

If you're just replacing the mufflers you won't have a problem with the PCM setting codes. That's genereally only when you delete the catalytic converter.

Borla by far makes the best sounding exhaust, but are pricey.
Flowmasters also sound good on a 3800, but are in the middle for price range.
For something less expensive, thrush turbo mufflers aren't bad, but they have a slight rasp at high rpms.
I would avoid the SLP loudmouth mufflers. I haven't heard a single car (grand prix or otherwise) that they sound good on yet.

If you were making the decision to put one of the mufflers you mentioned on your car, which would you choose? Assuming you had to deal with the cost and such. There aren't many videos online of the base model 3800 exhaust tones with various mufflers.

I personally would spring for the Borla Pro XS. It turns out they can be found under $100 each online now a days.

Its hard to tell in videos on youtube because people record on potatoes, but heres a stock to Borla pro XS comparison.

It's 12:33 am and I'm feeling too lazy to run out and check on this: do you know if the mufflers are welded on from the factory on these cars?

Not bummer. Welding is the best way to keep mufflers in place.

That's true but I also don't have a welder here. I'm a senior engineering student far from from......... Not so much as a garage. I could get the tools around to do a temporary install until I am home in a few months. Then I could get them welded. Or I could wait. But no one likes to wait.

lol. An exhaust shop should be able to hook you up for pretty cheap. It's not like they're building a full catback for you. If I were to guess, they would charge you an hour labor, so the bill might be around $60 depending on your area. Since you said you're a student, if you school has any auto classes, you may want to talk to their instructors and see if they could use the muffler swap as a project. They might do it for free or really cheap that way.

Since you're planning on upgrading your mufflers, you may also want to look into upgrading your tips. The GXP (SPO) tips are nice chrome dual tips. They can be welded in or bolt on.

That's all true. My dad was an all around DIY guy with vehicles (and pretty much everything) growing up so I've been programmed to think of how I can do what needs done myself. Sometimes I forget that people actually offer services for what I need.. Haha.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to do some checking on this and see what I can come up with!

No problem, and good luck. Let us know if you need anything. I know there are quite a few members in the KC area if you need a hand or need help finding a shop to weld the mufflers for you.

I got lucky and found a borla catback off a 3000gt for 50 bucks at a junkyard. It had 2 small resonators and 2 mufflers on it, so I put the mufflers on my car and sold the other 2 to my friend for $25 lol
