Hello all. I'm brand new to this forum and happy that this forum exists.
First off, I should say that I've owned my 2001 Grand Prix for about four years. I've had no major issues with it whatsoever until recently.
The car has 169 thousand + miles, and about two weeks ago for the first time ever, the SECURITY light popped on for a couple of days, but didn't make the car shut off or cause the car to not start, etc. The light eventually turned off on its own so I didn't give it another thought.
I've also had times in the past where the SERVICE ENGINE light would pop on, but only had to do with the TPS and the light would turn off on its own once I reached a high enough speed for a certain amount of time, or hit a speed bump, etc.
This morning, my car started, but only ran for about 6-7 seconds before it shut off on its own. I started the car again... and it did the same thing. There were no lights blinking on the dash and the SECURITY was not on. All other lights that come on during start up turned off as usual.
I explained what happened this morning to a friend, and he said that the same thing happened with his '99 Saturn and he needed to have his fuel pump replaced. He said to try putting in some fuel injection cleaner (which I haven't done in months) which may be a temporary fix to help clean the gunk out of the fuel lines. That may help, considering the fact that I live in Minnesota, and the temperatures may freeze the lines. However; I drove the car to and from several places over the weekend, and today it is actually not that cold, so I'm just confused.
I'm concerned that the issue is much more than a fuel pump or gunk in the lines, but I can't even get the car started to take to the dealership. My fear is paying to have it towed and spending hundreds of dollars on having things repaired that may not even fix the issue.
I would rather fix it myself if there is a way I can.
Has anyone else here ever experienced anything similar to my issue(s)? I'm uncertain if its a domino effect from the SECURITY light coming on that just seemed to correct itself, or something else. I'm not rough on the car, and am very good about oil changes when due, etc.
Any helpful information, suggestions and/or advice that you guys may have would be greatly appreciated!
Also, if you have any links available with information that may help me solve this problem, please add them as well. Thanks
