Hey guys thought I would leave the 3800 scene but I saw this nice clean 97 black gtp I test drove last weekend and fell in love with the car but I heard 97 black gtps are the weakest of the 97-03 grand prixs any thing I might want to look out for I will be picking it up tomorrow .... Oh the car has 224k on the chassis 90k on the motor and 60k on the trans no issues with the car whatsoever except the rear window motor needing a replacement I will replace aftermarket parts on the chassis, and engine, etc but before I do I want make sure what to look for thanks again great site by the way very helpful!

    I wouldnt say its "weak".

Its still a L67 with a 4T65e-HD. Its just that being a 97, its the first year and many of them have quirks to them. Engine bay is set up a little different, the PCM is year only and minor stuff like that.

I would check for rocker panel rust and pull the carpet back inside the trunk and look at the strut towers. If you see any rust there isnt not worth it to buy unless you can get it fixed for cheap.

I thought they came with 4t60e and that was a downside to them as well. Bt you couldd swap to 4t65e.

    97 GT's have the 4T60e.

GTP's had the 4T65e HD, so did the bonnevilles and buick rivs' that were supercharged.

I bought mine a year ago with 200 kms or 120,000 miles on it. I did the LIM gaskets which were original but ok and it needed a coolant elbow. I also replaced a wheel bearing and serviced the supercharger and transmission oil. I also touched up some rust at gas cap area myself. I bought the car for for $800.00 and it came with two sets of rims and snow tires all like new. I have had zero issues and car works well.

I have had fairly good luck with my 97. But like stated above there are a few little odd things about the engine.
