Thread: Lost and Confused: Temperature Gauge Issue

So this morning on the drive to school my car decided to start acting up. I have no clue of what is going on other than to tell you to watch the video below. All I'm thinking is is going on. Car is not overheating.... And its doing it randomly. Someone care to take a crack at what the issue is and what would cause it?

Not having a proper temperature is really scaring me into thinking my motor could be overheating at any second.

spoke to a few other members about it... And thats exactly what im going to do lol.

now that you mention it.... I think its been wrong since i have owned it!!! Its always said it was cooler than believable. But now it may have finally went faulty.

Sooo replaced temp sensor... New one is even worse, just rose and stayed at 260 instantly.

BUT i found a new melted wire upon further inspection... Please help(im desperately lost further) identify it and if its even related. It was spliced above the the sensor wire connection and connected into the block under the coil pack. see pics below:

Very common issue with these cars.

in this pic the wire in your hand, and the yellow wire on that plug connector is also cracked, those bare wires are your problems.




where wa the wire in your hand plugged in? thats not a factory end at all.

oh, pretty sure that plug with yellow broken wire is to the temp sensor, its a 5 inch pig tail from a plug to the sensor.

yes you are correct sir! That yellow wire connected to the broken plug that you seen in my friends hand. It was connected into the spliced(broken as you said so) wire By a female red piece that snapped off. it connected to were the wire was broken and then the male( the yellow wire) plugged into it right before sensor.

Solution proposal...

1.Go to junkyard and get a new set of wires that connect to the sensor...
2. Cut the ones at the junkyard a bit before the connector
3. Take both new connectors and a new plug.
4. get it home and connect by most likely solder with proper wrapping.

How does that sound to you?

id just hit a JY and cut that plug off another car, leave it as long as you can 4 to 5 inches is good, then solder and shrink tube it.

Sweet thanks as usual scotty! You just summed up my idea! And i agree... Shrink tubing is the way to go!
