not sure if that went through, but this is my 3rd gtp and never ran high octane, and never had this prob. its 1,400 just in labor if its the valves gonna have em do both sides right away. But i can get a refurbished one for 2,000, or one with 50,000 on it for 1,500. What ya think of that?

Just because you never ran it, doesn't mean you're doing it right.

These cars need the high octane to prevent detonation.

Which, this one might have got.

And if that's the case, time for a new motor.

Easy case, it's a coil...so like I said, swap them around and see if the misfire moves off of #3.

ya but all the lower priced ones i have found have insain miles on them, mine only has 120,000 on it. i looked on carpart.com Got other places i can look? I would like to get at least 04 or newer to get the gen 3 engine. and lower miles so im good for a long time hopefully?? Why you supposed to run higher octane gas? Alot of vehicles say that, but who does it.. Just wonderin

we all run 91 or higher, the engine needs the extra octane to keep detonation down. detonation is what chips a piston. and the extra heat of being in a heat sandwich.

yes you will pay a few bucks more at the pump, but your car will have more power, like you'll feel the difference, and the engine will be happier as well.

this thread tells it all, happy reading. http://www.grandprixforums.net/what-...here-1507.html

you need a scanner, all of this can be done in a auto zone parking lot, move a part, have it scanned. or buy the torque app for your smart phone or a cheap scanner, some are as little as 20 bucks on line.

you can also rent a scope and look at the piston, (stick it in the spark plug hole) auto zone and pep boys do the free tool rental as i call it, you leave a deposit and they refund the full amount when you return the tool.

wow, plug type question failed my mind this time round lol

if you put plats in, thats your problem for sure. they hate the 3800 engines. or the 3800 hates the plugs, take your pick.

you want to use iridium plugs or copper core plugs.

ya thats what i have always heard also thats what i had put back in w i got the tune up almost 10 bucks a piece. K i will do the higher octane from now on also. i will do what i can to check this out before i have to take it in nxt mon. Just not sure if i should be runnin it like this or not, but i guess im not sure how lnog its been like this, so should b ok for another wk i would think, and even if it is the engine i will be gettin a diff one ne way so doesnt really matter does it? Like i asked before does ne one know of a diff website i can get an engine off of? I found a couple with 50,000 - 100,000 on them with chargers and everything right around 1,700. Shipped to me.

change the plugs to iridium, the engine may not be hurt. plugs are cheap enough.

most of the time finding a engine is a lot of leg work, searching junk yards, calling ones to far to just drive to. some they pull the engine, note the year car and miles, (and make sure it runs ok) others you pull the engine, and its pot luck, good part is they will warranty the engine for 60 days or so, bad part is they dont cover the labor to do another swap. just give you another engine.

craigslist parts outs are also a good place to find a engine, regal GS and GTP"s same engines. you can use a 97 and up engine no problem.

The plugs i had them put in when i did the tune up are the iridiums i have heard that all other plug dont work for crap in these engines so that is what i had them put back in it.

if you have 93 or higher in your area, use the highest grade. 91 just get your by, 93 is where its at. like i said before, you can feel the power increase.

and not all gas is the same, i can get 93 from one place and it sucks, feels like 87, 9 i no longer buy gas there) the place down the road, their 93 makes the car happy.

ok, im gonna prob run 91 for now. It will be better than what i was doin, and should work good, i dont beat on it ( usually, on occasion for a couple seconds) so should get by with it. If that is what they find wrong, is that there is a chunk out of the piston, then that will prob change my mind and will prob run premium, but no one around here has that prob that i have talked to. Takin it to Bergstrom and they are thinkin its gonna be somethin a little more simple than the engine, they said and i also know that the 3.8 is pretty much bullet proof. So got my fingers crossed they are right!!

being you have 19 posts, im willing to bet you have not surfed this whole site yet, there are a ton of chipped pistons on stock engines, just like yours. 93 cost pennies more then 91, a few bucks more a fill up, its worth it really. cheap insurance.

people who run 91, dont have 93 in their area most of the time, so you take what you can get.

ok ok you have talked me into it, i will give it a whirl. Your makin me laugh tryin to sell me gas. its all good though i will run it that way you guys cant blame me from now on for runnin wrong gas. And yes it prob is cheaper than replacing an engine. But like i said hopefully its not that serious.. No I havent been through the site much yet. I have always wanted a GXP, but they are so expensive, are they less problem prone than the gtp's?

gxp has the same problems, and the tranny problem is worse due to the extra HP and torque.

trust me, i'd rather pump 87 as its cheaper, but when theres a real safety issue with the engine, its worth it in the long run.

run whats in your tank to E or as low as you normally would then use the 93, you'll feel a difference pulling out of the station onto the road.
