For those of you who read my Repair vs Replace thread, the choice has been made for me. I cannot get financing anywhere for a used car, and my grandmother is not ready to sell hers. I will be going the "Repair" route.

    But anyway...

I set a new record for trip average MPG according to Scangauge. 33.1MPG over a 35 mile trip mixed city and mountainous rural driving, with a slight tailwind. Outside temp was 64F, engine temp ranged from 193 to 200. Gasoline was Irving brand summer blend 87. Sure beats this winter with my partially stuck open thermostat, winter blend fuel and bitter cold temps. Not to mention the studded snow tires (gotta stick those on craigslist) Many trips of this distance, the engine would not warm past 177.

The other data points are(from top left to bottom right)
Gallons used this tank (my gauge dont work)
    Transmission Fluid Temp
    Trip AVG MPG
    Engine Coolant Temp.

My tank average will be nowhere near 33, this was a single 35 mile trip. I was in stop and go city traffic for awhile this afternoon and was averaging 19-22. I was just claiming a personal best on a single trip, no need to buzzkill...

My gtp gets 30mpg hand cal so I don't think with correct driving 33mpg is out of the question.

I was cruising down the interstate one night and reset my DIC and it read 40+ mpg for almost half an hour.

You would be surprised what a little tail wind will do to your car. I reset my MPG on my Cobalt and got few feet off a semi's bumper and it held 60-some MPG as long as I was there ( about 10 minutes )....as soon as I pulled out....fell like a rock.

Now I have a hard time believing this one, but I reset my MPG on the DIC part way through the trip and it read 34-36 for an average all the way home.

    DIC and MPG counters suck.

If you don't do it the old fashioned way by taking how many miles you've driven and divide it by how many gallons you toss in during your next fill up...then it's all skewed crappy numbers.

Mine actually works out pretty close. I use scangauge primarily to monitor how much fuel Ive used on a given tank, my gas gauge rarely works. The difference in what SG says I used, and what I actually pumped is less than 5%. If SG can reliably calculate on the fly consumption, then mathematically, it can produce reliable MPG data.

My DIC is hit or miss though.

This. I reset my DIC every week when I fill up. I do the math every time I fill up. Today, my DIC said 21.4 mpg. When I did the math, it was 23.1.

I did it! Click through my fuelly stats for todays fuel up. Had to go up north to pick up a friend who spent a week in Canada. This trip averaged over 33mpg, and I did not touch the interstate once. This trip was on rural roads, in rolling terrain, between 40-60mph, tailwinds northbound and headwinds southbound. Mixed use of AC and open windows. Engine temps of 197-202 on the highway and 206-215 in some of the slow moving towns. One effective difference on this trip was that in the mountains, I did not allow the gear drop and rev up to maintain speed, I moved over to the granny lane and allowed the car to slow, picking the speed back up at the top of the hill without the increase in rpm.

The interstate in northern maine is now limited at 75mph, meaning the average driver does 80-85. On past trips I have found that setting the cruise at 81-82 gives me an MPG of 19-22. I did not use the interstate today, therefore, did not use the cruise.
