i have a 97 se with the 3800 in it. I have been having problems with the car shutting down when coming to a stop. It appears to have a problem reaching idle after i let off gas when i come to a stop or randomly slow down. The HUD goes all crazy and then the "check guages" light comes on indicating that engine is off. I just slap into neutral, fire it up, and continue on my way. It is just an aggravating issue that i wondered if anyone had same issue.

it is in multiple positions, full, empty, half full. It just seems like it cant recoup when you let off the gas and eventually dies. Some days it never happens and then other days it happens 6 to 7 or more times. I have replaced fuel filter but this didnt seem to remedy it

you could try cleaning the throttle body. and the maf with maf cleaner.

if that dont fix it im thinking crank sensor maybe, if you notice the tach drop to zero, then stall thats a crank sensor symptom.

generally i dont even notice it has died until the hud goes nuts. I was thinking there was a fuel delivery problem because thats just what it seems like. I have cleaned the fuel lines out and the injectors too.

Maf... had the same issue. Do yourself a favor and spend the money for a GM maf. I've heard mixed reviews about the parts store replacements, but I'll say the AutoZone one worked flawless for me. I'm certain that will fix your problem.

dont buy a maf unless you have a code that says the maf is bad. they are not cheap at all. used oem go for 40 ish.

I have this exact problem you have with my 98 GT, the shop said my Intake Manifold Gasket was bad, causing too much air to go into it, causing the stalls.

To rule out the MAF causing the issue, unplug it and drive without it for a bit, see if the problem continues.

If they problem magically stops, you've found the issue.

If it continutes with the MAF unplugged, keep searching.

This. And if it DOES go away, try the pick and pull lots for a MAF. I had to replace it on my GP at about 100k miles. That replacement was still going strong when I sold it at 204k. And I never got a MAF code that it was bad. Car just stalled when I slowed down, and if I kept giving it gas, it would keep running.

I have a 1999 grand prix gt 3.8L I also have a problem with my car dying, it seems to happen more when I press the gas pedle lets say because the light has turned green' but all of asudden I have to hit the brake it will usually die easier that way. I can watch the RPM's drop rite to zero and some times you can see it try to catch it's self but cant kick the RPM's up fast enough to keep running.I have had it die while I was doing 70Mph on the freeway just because I let my foot up just a little bit. There is one thing I would like to know when your car dies does the traction control light come on saying its off and what about your service engine soon light does it come on? if so then you have a bad crank position sensor" GUARENTEED"
