I have a 2003 grand prix SE with the 3.1L and I am in the process of adding some engine mods. I am adding a k n custom cold air intake, I am replacing the spark plugs, upgrading my wires to Taylor street thunder 8mm and I also purchased a throttle body from a 3400 series motor. this will give me another 4mm of intake as far as the throttle body goes. I am hoping this will help with the addition of the intake. Anyone see any problems with the upgrades or anything I could encounter pre/post installation????

K&N intake kit is expensive and worth way less than its priced for.

Taylor wires are good. Money well spent

Throttlebody upgrade is nice, but its not really going to get you much more power, the motor won't be sucking in anymore air than it would with the factory throttlebody. Its a good supporting mod, but you won't see anything right now.

Truthfully there isn't much in the way of mods for the 3.1. Its not a big market. You'd be best doing research to see if a turbo kit off the older 3.1s would be able to work with your motor, if so that may be a good project for this car. Boost is always fun. But a big turbo kit would likely be too much for that motor.

One thing I do know if they are known for leaks at the intake manifold, just like our 3.8s. Make sure you look into that, could cause major problems if not addressed.

    And btw

    3100 TB is pretty puny...

Apparently, 3500 top swap (ported intake, larger TB, aftermarket intake/catback blahblah), headers, tune...should run down an N/A 3800 with mods. I wouldn't see why not...plus not to mention they sound worlds better.

But in the end, it'll still run 15's and be dog sh1t slow.

I actually bought a k n cone filter and I am going to build my own intake which will save me tons on money..

After reading enough threads I do get the idea I wont see any huge gains but in the end I am not looking for 75 horses plus on gains because that will probably get me in trouble lol

Should everything from my stock throttle body switch over nicely to the 3400 upgrade?

MMS 3100/3400/3500 Grand Am/N-body Turbo Kit - Milzy Motorsports

That may work with a little fab. Just make sure to check the 4t65 box.

I mean that the kit is for the 3100, and you can option it for the 4t65 transmission. Which is the same combo found in your car. The catch is that it was designed for a grand am so there may be some small fitment issues, hence the possible fabrication.

I say go for it because then you can have a powerful grand prix and have it sound nice.

...powerful grand prix and sound nice....

rolls off the tongue kinda funny.

v6z24.com seems to have tons of info on the turbo 3100/3400...might look there if you want to boost it.

Granted, that's the gen previous to yours...but most of everything should still be somewhat the same.

The problem with that is if you look at the weight differnce between the vehicles it.makes more sense to just do a whole engine. All that work and money will get you further with a 3.8.

I agree unless you have exhaust sound as a high priority. The 3.1 will sound much better than the 3.8.

Update on the ride. I put in a 56mm throttle body, new taylor wires and performance iridium plugs and my own custom pieced CAI. From 4000 rpm on it sounds like a 454! she roars when i hit the pedal hard. I also have noticed much better gas milage, AND I gained just under 2 seconds for my 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile time. Incredible considering what I did really wasn't anything huge. More than satisfied and proved everyone wrong who didnt think it would do anything. Pretty sweet

Will do when I get the chance! Does anyone know what a larger Plenum would yield ontop of the intake I have put in... Plus I will be customizing an exhaust system too. Gotta get everything all straightend out.

maybe you can find a 3400 intake plenum and port that?
the next thing you should do is open up the exhaust, get some 3500 exhaust manis and crossover. get a 2.5 in downpipe from somewhere too.
