Good enough to buy?

I've owned some firebirds but never grand prix. So my question is i saw a car today at a place i went to before for vehicles. It was a 2000 grand prix gtp Daytona 500 model. He wanted $4000 and wouldn't budge past $3950 lol.
The only bad thing that worry's me is the miles. The transmission seemed to shift really smooth it was really low on fluid but they put more in and are checking for leaks. The engine has 227XXX miles on it. So i am more worried about the engine. the rest of the car looks surprisingly well kept a few rust spots on underside nothing big i think. Not as bad as most cars in my area with all the salt. Should i pass it up and wait for another one to come along. Just worried that the engine will go out before im finished paying on it. Is the 3800 bulletproof enough to trust well after 227k
Besides that the traction control wont go back on and the abs light is on.

I wouldn't buy. That's way too much.
I wouldn't pay even 1800.

The motor should be fine but that's way to much money. The daytona 500 is nothing special really. It's just a grand prix. I wouldn't give more than $2000.

guess ill look for another just hard to find a supercharged 3800 pontiac in my area for around 2-4000
most in my area have 150-200k miles on them for the gtp's

So what if you just found a clean GT or SE and top swapped since GTP's are so hard to find.

even the gt's within 75 miles of me are expensive i looked online multiple places. theres another gtp selling with 190k miles same year for 3500$ seems the going rate around here for any 150+ miles gt - gtp is 3000+ from dealer and 2500+ private party in craigslist 150k+ miles theres a few, rough though. thats why i wasnt sure if it was a good deal. for my area it kinda looked like the right price area i was more worried if it fell apart what would a new engine cost from a junkyard or something i suck with engines .

Just keep an eye out on Craigslist. Some crazy finds out there. I picked up my gtp for 1000, bad tranny was only issue. Total in repairs are about $600. My buddy picked up a 2001 mustang gt for 1500. Nothing wrong with it. Search neighboring Craigslist areas too. because zone 1 can have $2500 prices and zone 2 could be $1500

Ever since cash for clunkers, used cars have been pricey. My 2004 GT2 with 199k, was $3900. Miles shouldnt worry you that much, the 3800 is a tank. I would be more concerned with the transmission. Its a closed system, if youre low, youve got a leak. There are plenty of products out there that can make it shift smooth for a while to mask a real problem.

Heck, i came across an '05 Civic with 233k, it was selling at a dealer for $10,500.

That's how much I paid for mine too...a 2000 with 150k.....had a shot motor....got a used one for 500....bingo bango...its my dd...

I agree, too much money. Try expanding your search radius. There were tons of these cars produced and they are for sale everywhere. I bet if you'd be willing to drive a few hours each way you would find a way better deal.

Keep looking, you can find one with alot less miles for that price. at 225k+ miles there is alot more than engine/tranny you should worry about, car can go through multiple wheel bearings, sway bars, coolant elbows ect I wouldn't pay over 1500 for that, even in good condition. 3500 would be a good price if it had less than 125k miles.
