Thread: New Fuel pump installed

Yesterday I installed a new Delphi fuel pump from Napa in my 2000 grand prix. It is a little noisier than the old one, is this normal? The car runs fine, a lot smoother and does not stall out anymore as it did with the old pump. It did, however, pull code P1133, which I think has to do with an o2 sensor. I cleared the code and drove 20 more miles and the code did not come back. Any thoughts? should i be concerned about the noisier than I'm used to new fuel pump? will it quiet down as it breaks in or gets older? BTW, it was a pain in the rump to seat it down long enough to snap the ring in place, but I have read that this is normal.

Ok, thanks guys for the input. I have driven it about 50 or 60 miles now with the new pump, so I am assuming it would have failed by now if it was going to. It has thrown two codes, p0440 and p1133, but still runs great so i just cleared them out. I'm hoping it is just the computer learning the new part.?. IDK After I cleared the codes, they did not come back yet. The car has 152K on it, so I don't expect it to be perfect.

ok, thank you. I will pull the cover back off in the trunk and check to be sure everything is tight. Is there an easy way to check for a vacuum leak in the system or just press back down to be sure the lines are seated?

Ok, so it threw the code P0440 again and so I pulled back off the cover over the fuel pump to inspect the lines and lightly rinsed away dust and everything looks just fine. Nothing was loose, the snap ring was in place holding down the fuel pump firmly so I then I started the car back up and it ran for maybe a min then ran irratic (rpm's up and down) then quit. now it just cranks over and over and will not run. The pump is running just the same (I can hear it) and I checked at the shrader valve on the fuel rail and there is plenty of fuel that sprays out of that....Im stuck! ? I pulled off the middle line on the fuel pump (I think it's a vac line) and it was clean, dry, tight and looks just fine. Any Idea's? I have not touched anything else during this process. Has a new fuel filter that I just replaced last month, so should not be that. IDK??

I am pretty sure it is getting spark as it ran just before it sputtered out. If the pump is running and I have pressure at the fuel rail, can I assume the new fuel pump is working? what else could have suddenly quit working in the fuel system for this to happen? It's my only transportation, so Im frustrated. I had a good friend take me to work, thank God for that. I would just exchange to pump and try that, but it takes the part store a day or two to get one in and if that's not the problem, then Im still stuck. What to try next? Any advice?

I appreciate the advice! I ran out of time and had to break down and tow it to a shop...I usually try and do these things myself, but work got in the way. Good tips to try next time. I like the idea of using starting fluid to check spark, I was going to try and check it at one of the spark plugs, but the starting fluid is much easier to do. Will let you know what the shop finds out..

Update:
I picked up the car from the mechanic and the dern thing did not give him any trouble at all. He ran scan's and no issues were exposed. We don't know what to think...that car refused to run for two days for me. I don't trust it; worried it will happen again! Any ideas? Been driving it now for three days with zero issues. One thing it did that it has never done before is when I filled up the gas tank, it over flowed from under the car. I looked at the fuel pump area and could not tell where it came from, but that was after I drove it back home and could have drained away by then. Should that concern me?

That's exactly what the issue is. The gasket. Happened to me once. Gasket wasn't sealed properly

Ok, I will run some gas out of it and pop the fuel pump back up and re seat it. Any tricks to making sure that Gasket is seated properly...very hard to tell and impossible to see while fighting the pump down. Thanks for the feedback!

I used a little to hold it on the pump...seems to be fixed now. The O-ring was pinched, which is why it was so hard to install the new pump to begin with, I'm guessing. I had the pump back in place in less than ten minuets. Will keep posted. Drove it 100 miles and no codes and runs smooth. I think if it were to mess up (with this issue) it would have.
