The car is a baseline 2006 Grand Prix with 174,xxx miles on it. No problems with it until now except having to change the brakes like all the time.

Got in the car this morning and my check engine light stayed on. It was a rather cool morning, temp around 37 degrees. Amount of gas in the car was between a quarter of a tank and empty. I rarely let it get that low, but my son drove it and left it like that. Grrrr....

So I hoped filling the gas tank would get the light off, but no such luck. After putting almost 14 gallons it, the light stayed on for my whole 60 mile commute to work. Car seems to be running fine. The only thing I've noticed is the exhaust seems a bit rich when I first start her up in the morning.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

go to a auto parts store, have them scan your car, the code they give you will lead you to your repair.

Not saying this is your issue but I have had to replace my EGR valve a few times in my 06 GP. There is something that melts the wire or something and they have to replace it everytime. But an auto parts store can give you the code and you can look it up. Good luck!

Code came up as coolant. We are going to try changing the thermostat first and see if that corrects the issue. On this particular car, will disconnecting the battery clear the code or am I going to have to bring it to a shop to clear it?

    Thank you!

We need the exact code. If it is the low coolant code and the thermostat is bad it'll reset itself

I had a coolant temp sensor out of range on a cold morning a few weeka back when the car "didnt warm up as fast" as the computer would have liked to see. I put a thermostat in havent seen the code back yet.

Unfortunately I don't have the exact code. I just hit Auto Zone to help with general troubleshooting. And my code has gone off by itself, however, it warmed up down here yesterday. We are going to replace the thermostat over the weekend and see if it goes away for good. I'll know in a few days, it's supposed to get cold again.

    Thanks!

EGRs rarely go bad. I just replaced one in my 06, but it's a total statistical anomaly. Multiple? Hard to believe there's an honest mechanic involved.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.
