Sorry if this sounds like a newbie question but here goes.

My 2004 GP has a minor pan gasket leak, on the order of one quart every 3500-4000 miles. I checked the oil this morning, going on a road trip later, and the oil was in the hash marks but just barely. The dipstick unfortunately does not have low or high printed on them I went ahead and added a quart. Could this be too much oil? How much overfill can a 3800 safely take? Ive heard horror stories about foaming and throwing rods, and that not happening until youve been on the highway for a while.

as long as your within the hash marks your fine but you need to be changing your oil at around 3000-3500 miles for our engines to live up to their legendary reliability... dont believe the bottle of oil even with full synthetic 5-7k is way to long to go without changing your oil... thats how people foam up and throw rod bearings

I go by the oil life monitor and change it when it gets to about 30% life remaining. Im at 3500 since last change and still have about 70% left. I do mostly highway driving. According to Edmunds the 3000 mile thing is just a myth.

What did the dipstick say after you added oil? Keep it toward the bottom of the top line.

ive got 98 so i guess the oil monitor is different at 50% im at 3,000 miles... do as you wish as far as oil changes but if going much more than 4,000 miles in between id suggest using nothing less than wix filters and checking my oil every 500 miles or so
