Im installing a VS cam, i wanna know if i should delete the EGR or keep it? The erg actually works(providing that it sends cooler air into the cumbustion chamber and helps with the emissions) but some people would differ with that statement.

My thing is i know about EGRs and camshafts but what i dont know is how these 3800s perform with a aftermarket cam and what they dont and do like. Some people say delete yhe EGR and some people have told me that it'll be fine if i kept it.

    SO 3800 specialist, any suggestions???

You can keep it, if you want.

Removing it does clean up the intake alot and it cleans up the engine bay.

If you have a tuner you can tune it out and add 1-3* of timing back into the tables to gain what you will lose, back.

EGR does precisely what its supposed to, reduce combustion chamber temps and decrease fuel usage.

If you kept EGR and added that timing you'd see an increase in fuel economy instead of merely maintaining the same fuel economy.

The carbon from the EGR tends to coat the supercharger rotors, this should help them seal and increase VE.

As to how much it actually helps, that is unknown.

Well..since you asked for my opinion Ok..I kid.

I'd keep it, unless there is a specific need to remove it. Like Matt mentions there are benefits from it and if you are in an emissions state, likely they'll be looking for it.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    Agreed....

So, does the EGR actually pull timing? I figured it would help with timing or at least the KR since it is introducing cooler air into the combustion chamber and helping the fuel burn better.

I know our timing is automatically adjusted through the PCM ( as long as there isnt any knock it would advance as needed and retard as neccessary). Getting a dyno Tune(preferably) would set and dial everything in more precisely and the timing would have a set degrees to refer to.

So if the EGR helps in so many ways, shouldnt the timing already be provided from the benefits of the EGR rather than having to add it?

Timing difference is negligible if you're going to tune the car.

KR shouldn't occur outside of boost, ever.

The timing difference isn't why the EGR improves fuel economy.

It improves fuel economy by filling the cylinders with dead air. Since the air is dead, no fuel is added for that air. Thus reducing total fuel used.

Yeah, enertia. Thanx for the responses.

I just dont understand why people delete the EGR. I would rather have better performance with having to clean the upper intake periodically opposed to not having complete combustion which means not reaching optimum performance, hotter chamber temps, resulting in KR and more pollutant emissions.

Ima keep the EGR, think the car will like that a lil better....

    Thanx, yal...

For what its worth, I deleted the EGR on my Stealth and I was getting 25-26 mpg daily driving it (factory rated at 19/24). Granted there were other flow mods (intake, downpipe, test pipe, etc), but my point is, if it helps fuel mileage, the help is negligable.

I look at it as its pumping dirty exhaust back into the engine. Imagine eating your own crap.

Plus remove = weight reduction racekar status. Then again I deleted mine so I wouldn't have to constantly clean the TB and one less thing in the engine bay

Did I not already say if you see KR outside of boost your car is fubar'd?

I ditched the EGR. I dont care about any possible fuel economy losses. I also would prefer to have a forever clean intake system.

Some cars come without EGR now. They can meet emissions without it, so they do without.

Agreed, I never liked the thought of dirty exhaust being routed back into my intake either.

Newer cars are built to run without the EGRs, so they were tuned for no need of it. Plus most newer cars being direct injected, the fuel burns much more efficient and cleaner from those high compression rates.

It's a win-loose situation.....I guess u go the route your TUNE likes best
