I'm doing the diy aux input on my stock radio. I have it all done, and it won't turn on at all. When I first removed it(from the dash but still hooked up), it was working fine, I pressed the time button and the display lit up. Then I removed just the faceplate(with the radio still plugged in) and I pressed the time buttons again and nothing happened. I just assumed that was because the contacts on the face plate were no longer on the main circuit board.(there are little metal tabs on it that go on the circuit board) The wire that goes to it was still plugged in though. Well now I'm done with the mod and still even when completely assembled, the same problem happens. What I do notice is that when I plug the radio in to the car with the key off, the CD player makes noise for a second. Still doesn't light anything up.

Anyone have any ideas as to why? I'll look more into it tomorrow, but if anyone has any idea whether or not it's supposed to make that noise when you plug it in(that would be helpful to know), or anything else in general as to why it might not be working, please let me know. I want to keep the stock radio, and I don't even think I can get a JY one because of theft lock.

Edit: Just a burned out bulb and a dumb moment here.

Do you know if there are any small built in fuses in the radio in case the contacts touched the body of the radio causing it to blow? I really didn't see any normal looking fuses, just a bunch of little components on the board.

Oh also I have an extra faceplate for the same radio that I bought a while back to fix my buttons that were worn out, and I plugged it in(didn't put it all the way on though, so the pins at the bottom weren't hooked up) still the same thing. I'll put it on correctly and try that. Thanks.

Okay well I had a dumb moment, but there are a few excuses. The only problem here is the the display bulb is burned out...yeah. The reason for this dumb moment is because I tried a JY faceplate and still the same symptoms. Well JY parts aren't always 100% working. I was using the time buttons to make sure it was working, when that's not really the way to test it. Plus it burned out somewhere between removing it from the radio, and me un-hooking the wires. That's a lesson learned, bulbs can burn out at ANY time lol. Literally. Now all I need to do is replace the bulb, and it should be all good and I'll have an aux jack with the stock radio. It looks like I have to de-solder the connections and pull the brown assembly off, is that right?

Anyone know where to get a replacement bulb soon, or do I need to order it and wait a week before having a complete car? Kinda looks like a racekar plus seats right now, I've been driving it like that.

After a lot of searching I came across a thread with this linked: http://www.backinblackgp.com/Radio_Lamp_repair.htm

I guess I'll drive my temporary semi interior looking race-kar to radioshack and give that a try.

I also changed the title so it will help steer people who know what they're talking about in the right direction lol

Awesome, I got that light replaced with the radioshack light(it's a little dimmer than stock but oh well, I don't truly have ocd), and I noticed another was out so I replaced it too from the JY faceplate. I put everything back together and the aux input works great. This isn't my first time doing an aux input, so that part was a breeze. In fact the first time I did one I had no info at all, I literally had to test to see what pins were the audio signals and break down the aux pins to figure out which wire goes where. On that system I put the jack inside the center counsel, mine I mounted right on the radio, here's a pic:

At night when the headlights are on you can see the jack is lit up, because the top of the jack case is actually clear. That's kind of cool.

There is a GM part number that you can order to replace it with the factory style bulb. The part number is 16208443. It comes complete with the housing. It is on several websites and possibly in stock at your local dealer. Rock Auto has it for $7.57, Amazon has it for $9.30. The last time I had one go out I took a generic instrument bulb and soldered it in, but if you want the correct bulb it is available.

By the way, the aux jack looks good. I have done this a couple of times myself. I mounted them just above where the compact disc logo is.

Thanks for the info, I'll go that route in the future.

That's not a bad spot, probably the only two you could put it since everywhere else is covered by buttons.
