FWIW I did two 8 hour runs in 90-95 degree heat the past week, through the hills of PA and they have some hills. The first leg was actually 85-90F outside and the trans averaged 190F with a 195F t stat. On the way back temps outside were 90-95F and the trans averaged 200F with one spike to 215F. 160F is considered the bottom of the operating temps for the trans. The high end is up around 230F.
Ooooo lookey what I found
Trasmision Automatic A Buick-Oldmobile 4T65E
Only temp stated is HOT which is 266* F.
the thermostatic element should close, but the question is: at what temp does it close?

Drove mine today, it was 95 outside. Temp gauge stayed on the quarter mark, trans never got past 191. That was some highway and a lot of stop and go in OC, MD. You can imagine a beach town with everyone there for the fireworks display. It was some slow going at times. When I left the temp outside dropped to the mid-80s and the trans ran 186.
Re: 04 GP Temp gauge gets 1 notch over the middle? also loss of acceleration?
in boston traffic yesterday, my temp gauge got as high as one mark past center and the trans as high as 201. Oddly enough, running the AC caused the gauge to drop to between center and one mark below. I know the middle of the scale on an 04 is 210.
