Transmission slipping! Help!

Hey all,

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT1 with 176k miles. I was preparing for a long road trip yesterday, and while getting my oil changed, was convinced I needed my transmission flushed. I figured it would be a good thing, being that I would be making a 12-hour drive the next day.

After the flush, the trans is slipping. Now that I've read flushing high-mileage trans is a horrible idea, I am worried that I may be damaging (or already have damaged) my transmission. I am 600+ miles away from home, and unsure what I should do.

I checked the level, and see that the fluid is brown, and it looks to be overfilled as well. While driving, I only noticed the slipping while going uphill and when accelerating. As long as I'm on flat land, at like 65 mph, it's generally ok.

I read something about the flush taking out stuff which causes friction necessary in the trans. I think I had it flushed once before, maybe 45k miles ago and it acted up for a while, just like this, but eventually stopped. I thought it was normal smh. Will the fluid eventually correct itself, or do I need to do something?

Give it a while of easy, non-spirited driving and see if it goes away. As long as dex III was used, it should be ok.

Read the forums, flushes are strongly advised against for this very reason.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what they used. And yeah, I now see that flushing is a no-no lol.

i would suck out some fluid from the dip stick, and then dump in a quart of the lucas trans stuff. some thin (1/4 inch tops) clear tubing and start sucking it till it siphons out on its own. you need a long tube so it can reach the trans, come up the dip stick tube, and then hit the ground, lower than the trans pan. drain into a pail.

how high is your mileage? had the trans ever been service before in any way?

do your best to stay out of the throttle. 600 mile is a long way home.

Thank you for replying. I am actually driving home now. It seems a little better than before, but I am taking it easy. When I get home, I will definitely try the Lucas.

Ensure you are checking it with the engine running. Otherwise it will appear overfull. Your symptoms actually sound a little like it's underfull. After a flush, you shouldn't have brown fluid.
