So after owning my GTP for 4000 miles and 6 months, its about time for an oil change. The problem is that i don't know which company's synthetic oil to us. So i was just curious about what oil fellow grand prix owners use and think is best for there cars. So share away below( it will help me out a lot)

If the car has higher miles and hasn't already had synthetic run through it, then you don't want to switch to synthetic now. As for what oil I run, I run whatever is on sale.

i use what ever is on sale, never really gave oil much of a thought, just change it as needed. and i don't use synthetic oil because it just costs to much, plain and simple.

No doubt about that. $30-$50 for an oil change I'm doing myself is ridiculous.

Go to Walmart and buy the 5 quart jugs of Mobile 1. I run K&N filters mainly though.

my brother is a full synthetic type of guy on the other hand, crazy f'er, anyways he buys in bulk off the net, 5 gallons pails of royal purple oil at a clip , and trans and gear oil, all in 5 gallon shots.

just talked to my brother, he found it cheaper to buy it by the case off ebay for the royal purple. im sure you could find what ever you prefer that way for less than going to the store, unless shipping kills the whole deal lol

I use Amalie oil in my car. It was house brand oil from the parts store that I used to work at. $1.92/qt, pretty hard to beat. I figured if the owner of the parts store ran this in his S-10 delivery vehicles, which all have between 200K-350K miles on the original 2.2 or 4.3 engine, it should be just fine for my car. It's not so much about the oil, but rather how often you change it. Bought the car with 71K miles, has 133K on it now and have had no problems.

Two schools of thought, on my older 2001 GP, I used regular (Organic) oil with an additive (Prolong) that I will swear by. I put it in my older Ford Explorer too and you can hear the engine smooth out as it gets into circulation, no joke. I got that GP with 30k and now have 198k on her, even though she's just sitting there now, it starts right up and dip stick is clean as a whistle.

On my new (older, lol) 2000 GTP, because of the more aggressive nature I plan to drive her and the higher heat extreme's (6,000 rpm) I put 100% Synthetic in it and won't consider anything else. Synthetic just doesn't break down as easy as organic, but again, if you change it when you should, then it shouldn't matter. With normal driving you can extend intervals between changes so the cost is offset over the long run (3k organic -vs- 5k or more synthetic between changes). The synthetics like Mobile 1 have detergents in them as well, that'll keep things cleaner. Suggestions not to use Synthetics in older engines stems from the older synthetics running thin and leaking where there was no problem (leaks) with using regular. Personally, like now, I've never encountered that problem, not saying it's a good/bad idea at all.

Just my $.02... ultimately, it's a matter of choice

Woah thanks for all the input thus far, i think i might have figured out the mind set for myself. I think i will just stick to what is on sale and full synthetics. Cause i think of oil as the think that is taking care of the engine so therefore important.

@cooloneThanks for that explanation, it was a very helpful. Will surely help me in the future.

Supertech, from Walmart it's $11.25 for a 5 qrt jug and I stocked up on old style PF-52 filters. I have it in my 98 and it has over 200k on her. I took the heads off to clean up some carbon on the intakes and to a little polish work and everything was clean as a whistle. 4k mile changes and coulden't be happier for a $14 oil change. Also in my area Supertech is made by Exxonmobil so I figure same thing as the $28 stuff in a different jug.
