My buddy is looking for a new car, he found a 98 daytona. It has 224k miles and the guy says it burns oil and the trans is prolly bad. I know they are kinda rare so I thought I might be worth getting and swapping the trans. Do these need a different trans? And does any one know how many they made?

do not pay any more for it than you would for a regular grand prix. everything is literally exactly the same except a couple body accents if it even has them.

If It was in perfect condition and I was in love with it, I wouldn't pay a penny over $400.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

Only 1500 were made. As long as the body and the interior is in great shape and the car has all the daytona trim it could be a good buy. A cradle swap for a new engine and trans isn't that bad. I'd say no more then $1000, if you can swap out the cradle on your own you could have a pretty cool car. Plus while you're there you could do most of the mods you want and you could even buy a tep trans with the money you're saving.

Next to nothing, otherwise you're just buying someone else's problems. I don't like other people, or their problems.

I wouldn't pay much for it. If you could ge it cheap then it would be worthwhile since motors are so cheap.

I'd buy it for ~$500 over book. The original 98 Daytona package was an extra $2500 or so from GM IIRC.

So, rather than pay book value, you would prefer to lose $3,500 on a sh!tty broken-down car instead of $3,000. I hope you're not like... huffing gas or something. I worry about you, man.

...but if you're going to just go around handing out money, I could totally use some coilovers.
