I have an 03, Limited Edition, GT. Lately I have noticed that when I turn the key off, it wont go to the off position. To get it to turn off I have to hold down the brake, push in the key, turn it all the way back to the auxillary position, then advance it one move forward. This only works 50% of the time.
My wife can't do it ever. Long story short, I,ve been draining the battery. I think its time to change the ignition key switch. But if I do they come with new keys, then I'll have keys for the ignition and seperate keys for the trunk and glove compartment. Any thoughts, or suggestions?

Sounds like there may be an issue with the ignition lock cyl case, which has a key release actuator. You may look at that. As far as a lock cyl goes, I know that some dealers will code a new lock cyl to fit your existing keys, so that you won't have to have two keys. Not sure what the cost difference is between dealer and aftermarket, but it is an option. GM p/n for a new lock cyl is 15785106 for an 03 G.Prix. and they come with new tumblers and springs.

If you put in a new cly. it has to be taken to the dealer to be "flashed" into the computer or the secuirity system will never let you start the car.i would start at the shift lock mechainsm as it is released only when the brake pedal is depressed.the car might still think its in gear and thus not let you take the key out try putting the key in and wiggling the gear selector at the same time.check and make sure that little button you push on the shifter to unlock it comes out all the way .sometimes they stick.if this doent work you might be looking at a lock cly. and they are not cheap, even just to have flashed its like 120$ here.Let me know if this helps good luck to you

The PASS key module is not part of the key cyl on an 03. The cylinder is sold separately, and needs no programming. I suspect there is something wrong with the lock cylinder case solenoid, or the BTSI solenoid on the shift lever.

I have this problem with my key getting stuck in the ignition, until you replace it you can do this, i have a flat head screw driver (you need one with decent length) and directly under the ignition there is a little tab like think you remove, stick the screw driver all the way up and the key will come straight out. Ill take a video tomorrow and show you.

Also from what i read about it, its a common problem in GM vehicles.
