Thread: Front wheel squeak when in reverse

I have this drivers side front wheel squeak when backing up in my GP. But It doesn't squeak when going forward. I took the caliper and bracket off, cleaned everything including the pads, lubed the slider pins good, and it still squeaks when backing up.

I jacked the driver side front up again and put the car in neutral, and when I turn the tire backwards, i get the squeaking noise. If i take the tire off and turn the wheel hub backwards, no squeak. It's only when the tire is on the car, and you move in reverse.

Any ideas?

**Update - If I turn the wheel all the way to the right, I can tell the squeak is coming from the axle where it meets the engine.

Pull the tire and look to see if the backing plate is touching the rotor at all. Likely its the issue.

It's definitely coming from the axle where it meets the engine. Squeaks, and almost sounds like a scraping sound in reverse, but not in drive. The car sat for about a week and a half without moving, and it wasn't squeaking before that.

i just found my bracket that holds the abs plug bent and touching the rotor near the ball joint. it left a scar on the rotor. i beat it out of the way.

the abs plug was also off the bracket. i think when i got it buried in snow it bent it and pulled the plug off.

Checked out around the rotor, and nothing is sticking there. I can isolate the squeak to the axle where it meets the engine. Sorry if I'm not using the correct term.

Does the axle seal look damaged or anything?

It doesn't look damaged at all. And curious as to why it squeaks so bad only in reverse, and not forward. I would think direction would not matter if it's just spinning around in there.

I've fixed the issue. Sorry guys, it was a flat metal plate on the back side, and bottom of the rotor. I was looking along the top side of the rotor. And that plate was resting on the rotor, but would only squeak when in reverse which was weird. And it sure sounded like the axle was making that noise. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for all of the input.

what ya know, same area i had rubbing.

Whatcha know.. same thing I suggested. It's common. As for squeaking in one direction, it's probably the edge that was touching and it was getting rubbed the right direction to make the noise.
