154,380 miles high for a 2007??

I'm looking for my first GXP and found a nice color from a whole saler. If my math is correct that comes out to 19,297 a year which does seem pretty high. What kind of problems or things should I look for before buying a GXP with these miles?? Should I stay away?? Thanks.

If it's cheap enough it may be worth it.

Biggest problems of the GXP are the transmission if original and the DoD/AFM system is a known failure on the LS4. Motor mounts get wrecked semi often because of design. Everything else is a w-body common issue.

The dealer is asking $3,995. What kind of issues with the transmissionn and the DOD/AFM?? What's the common W-body issues??

Depending on the build date it could be less than 15,000 miles a year. My 07 GT (GTP) has 194,000 miles. I just lost the forward apply band, but the trans still shifts perfect. The GXP has to deal with more torque though so there is no telling how healthy the trans is at that mileage on it.

In short, the transmissions just grenade. The heat from the LS4 makes their life short, it cooks the fluid and most of them run with very high transmission temps throughout the life of the vehicle. Most the failure come from running too hot, poor maintenence, buring up clutches, failed torque converters or losing the forward band.

A good transmission cooler is a must on the V8 and once rebuilt with good parts they normally last a very long time.


Google most the DoD/AFM failures, the lifters are a poor design and can fail at random. It also leads to heavy oil consumption on some cars. The LS4 was one of the early motors they designed this system for, it works good but has problems in the early years. They kept the system in other platform and after 2010-2011 the failures are less but still happen.

General wear and tear are other things, wheel bearings, brakes, shocks etc etc.

I'm 2nd owner 2007 GXP 77k miles.

Previous owner had transmission replaced at an unknown mileage, only way I knew was the GM recertified tag. I had it done at ~73k after total failure. Replaced with full reman with hardened parts, better seals, and an external cooler.

It's about time to do struts on her and it's not cheap. Looking at about a grand in just struts (with shipping). Further the LS4 hates cheap tires. It came with stiff wall high performance run flats for a reason.

It might be a Grand Prix but it is the "performance" Grand Prix with the most expensive Every thing they could put on it. When you buy the top end fully optioned out version you have to account not just for regular maintenance costs, but the specialty maintenance of the "high-end" variant.

Spark plugs are a pain in the rear. Serpentine belt makes you want to tear your hair out. Replacing a battery can be an hour long project. Offset tire sizes mean you can't rotate like normal tires. "High performance" breaks with drilled rotors mean more cost when replacing them.


Please understand I do not say this to scare you away from the car, but if you are looking for a daily that will be cheap and easy to fix, look else where.

You can buy non drilled rotors to save you lots of money when they need to be replaced. The buick allure (super) ran the same size brakes but with regular blanks from the factory, they cost less than the fancy rotors.

I bought a used 06 gxp for $4000. It had 180,000 miles on it. This week I passed 260,000 miles. Things that went out on me where the tranny, harmonic balancer, motor mounts, alternator. My rack and pinion is next (leaking like a sieve). Oh yeah the friggin power steering cooler line had a hole in it from rubbing against something. Fixed that with a brake line and some fittings from home depot. Besides being a gas guzzler, it's also an oil guzzler. It uses a quart per month.

BUT.. I love my car ;-)
This is my 4th grand prix and 2nd GXP.
