thats pretty cool looking, but why the big U turn on the one pipe? dont that hit the ground?
does the cross over part come off? or is it all welded in place there? and your only reading the front 1/2 of the engine with the o2 sensor like that. not a huge issue tho.
The "loopy part" as I call it is to add extra length to the rear bank of cylinders, to make up for the front banks exhaust having to travel up and over the tranny. That is what makes it equal length. That's the key to taking away all the rasp and cackle from these engines and making them sound good. It doesn't scrape the ground. I "massaged" it mid loop to gain a little ground clearance where it passes under the frame rail. The front crossover piece is clamped on, as is the downpipes to "loopy" section and cat converter section. I wanted to be able to change out components at will. And yes the computer gets O2 readings from the front bank only, but it's not an issue. I ran it by one of the guys at ZZP before I started working on the system. Here's a pic with the front bank piece detached.

The 5th gen crosslace wheels look great on there as well at the other TGP touchese. The exhaust/headers is some piece of artwork! Sounds very nice like those couple 3800 Camaro's on youtube running crossover pipes. Out of curiosity though, what made you decide to Y it into one cat after you spent all the time and money with the custom headers & piping instead of keeping it true dual?
Great question. There's a few reasons why I ran it into a 3"cat.
1. Budget, time, hassle. Continuing two separate pipes all the way back to the rear would have required more resources than I wanted to at the time.
2. Space. Fitting two pipes around the fuel tank and rear control arms is tight. I know it can be done because I've seen pictures of it, but i didn't want to tackle it.
3. Sound. I experimented with different exhaust components and found that the 3" resonated cat made the car sound the best. These engines need to have equal length secondaries and then be tied back together in order to sound their best. Google or YouTube "Formula Holden". One of the rules for the cars was that each side of the exhaust had to be tied together before it exited out the back. Series officials wanted it that way because it made the cars sound less obnoxious. All the Busch Grand National race cars from back in the day tied together before exiting as well. I test fitted an equal length true divorced dual system on my car and it was OK at idle, but as soon as I took off it sounded like a pair of three-cylinder chainsaws buzzing around. Also, all those 3800 powered Camaros and Firebirds you mentioned have equal length headers and H or X pipes tying the two sound pulses together. That's why they sound 10 times better than a typical 3800 car. It's not the 3800 that sounds bad in our cars, it's the unequal length exhaust system.
Very good info. I kinda figured if it came down to needing 2 cats it would get a lot more pricey. I didn't even know about Formula Holden, but that's pretty awesome. At one point I was wanting to experiment with redoing the piping on my SLP exhaust, but I ended up throwing on a lightly used loudmouth II that my buddy took off his GTO as a resonator. Doesn't sound this cool, but still happy with it
