When I'm backing up or going forward on the driveway and hit the brakes it makes a clicking noise, loudest when I press on the pedal and a bit less subtle when I let go. It also makes this sound when I go over small bumps. At first i thought it may be a lose bolt on the caliper or knuckle but then I noticed it doesn't make the noise when its stationary only when its moving, even at the slightest movement, when i apply the brake i hear the click! Could this be a bearing issue?

check the dust shield is not rubbing the rotor. jack it up wheel on and spin the wheel by hand, listen for the sound. then take the wheel off and look for what your hearing.

you'll need the tranny in neutral to spin the wheels use the ebrake or chock the wheels if on a hill of any kind.

Ok i lifted it, put it on neutral and started wiggling the wheel around for that noise. It seems to be coming from the transmission. when i turn the wheel back and forth i hear the clicking sound come from the place where the axle goes in.

Watching a few vids, the area that the axle goes into the trans is the the cv joint right? Could this be the culprit?

im thinking the dust shield next to the rotor, if you bent it will all the work you did it drags the rotor and makes dragging sounds.

I removed tire and pin pointed the noise to be coming from trans, once again the best way I could describe it is it's the area where the axle goes into trans.

the boot area may click, but from the tranny there should be no sounds.

I feel like something makes contact in the there when I hit the brakes, it doesn't make the sound when the car is still.

Could the boot click loud enough to make a noise during braking and going over bumps? I'm thinking maybe there isn't enough axle lube there?

you installed two new axles didnt you? they should be good.

if you only hear it when the brakes are used its something with the brakes.

I didn't buy new axles. I thought the same about the brakes but I think the brakes are associated with the noise because they stop the axle from rotating thus making noise inside trans, I hope that made sense.

I think the cv shaft going into the boot on driver side is what's making the noise. It happens over little bumps and when I'm going about 3-5 mph and hit the brakes I hear the clanking rattling type noise I'm sure it's not the brakes or bracket. Anyway to test it out?

I think i narrowed it down to the that axle, I might as well replace both of them given their age. Are the surtracks from rock auto a decent option? I think all the other ones are remans but more expensive? I was reading this thread, not sure what to pick.

Napa? I usually buy axles from them and they now offer certain ones with heavy duty boots, and makes for a easy warranty exchange if needed

I think im going with the pepboy a1 remans. Closest to oem they have and theyre coming out to abt 90 for the pair, theyre good on their warranty as well.
I was wondering why the new axle had the 33 nut vs the remans having the oem 34, they are oems, i think he also said they come back less often than the new ones.

So i bought two axles and figured out the clicking noise was NOT the cv joint. It was a loose nut on one of the main control arm bolts(one closest to front of car). Im having a lot of these stupid expensive moments.
I thought about returning the axles but i noticed before doing all this both inner joints were leaking grease, they have about 167k on them and ive been feeling vibrations when i try going fast, although that was prbably the loose lca bolt.
Should i clean the old ones up and slap em back on or keep the remans?
