Hey guys, so digging into the 40th I just got, 140,000 miles. I noticed a hesitation recently, I changed spark plugs and wires and cleaned mass air flow sensor, it only really noticeable going up hill but when I get into it , it runs fine. I'm thinking possibly EGR?? Any inputs would be good!

What gas do you put in it? I ask because I was encountering the same thing. If you can eliminate vacuum leaks, clean grounds around the ICM, and clean the throttle body, all those could help. That was my path anyway and all those helped. But the guys here advised me to run Shell gas and that helped more than anything, after some time went by. I've stuck with it. Also pointed out to me here, was that if you'll notice, this probably happens when humidity is high. I reckon they built the cars wihout an ambient humidity sensor (ha ha I made that part up) and its just kind of a weak spot in the configuration. Cruise control going 40 or so, road goes uphill, she starts to stumble, if so- yep sounds like it.

Vacuum leaks are GTP enemy #1. Start at the T under the S/C snout and go from there. Apparently boosty cars do not play nice with rubber vacuum connections so ALL of them should be checked often. Remove hoses to closely inspect.

Sounds exactly like you are battling the torque converter.

40-45mph is already in 4th gear and I bet the rpms are really low around 1200-1500 in most cases. When you start going up the hill you are making it a pretty high load situation on the vehicle and it's fighting between staying locked in 4th or trying to down shift into 3rd.

Next time it does, just lift off the throttle and gently get back on it. Doing that will unlock the torque converter and you can keep going. Also anytime you are just going to bumming around town at speeds under 50-55mph, just leave it in 3rd gear. You'll be much happier about how it drives.

Now what causes the torque converter to go bad?

I didn't say it's bad, it's just the nature of the beast there.

Low rpm with high load aren't the best of friends. The chugging feeling is just the car fighting to decide what it wants to do. If you give it more throttle it'll just unlock and drop a gear but if you don't it just lugs along untill it's built enough speed to smooth out.

I'm not thinking that's the problem.. I've heard of that before though. Rpms go down, it's not that it's super bad, and it's not shaking the car it's more of a bogging down type of situation

Its true. I've been driving these cars a long time and if its a hilly stretch with 45 speed limit, you're better off in manual 3rd so the TC doesn't get confused plus you get a little compression braking. On flat road, 4th is fine. If there are hills and the speed limit is under 50, you and the cruise control both will like it better in "3". Just don't forget when you hit the big on-ramp to put it in 4th again lol.

My car never chugged under a high load situation in 4th, it either stayed locked up, builded some boost, and chugged along smoothly. If it needed to unlock, it just shifted to 3rd. It currently has a mis-fire and now it does what he says. Ive herd it wont lock up if it senses misfire. Is this true?

I've heard that the speed sensor can cause this problem as well ! I changed mine and good as new
