i know there may not be a good way to do this, beyond heavy suggestion, but i think it might be a good idea to suggest to everyone to attach pictures (especially for how-to's) rather than always linking... that will keep the pictures in the posts, in case the hosting moves or dies, etc. there's not much worse than seeing a sea of red X's in a forum because the pictures that are linked off-site are now MIA. (what's the upload size limit anyway?)

Right now there is not a limit on the size per say. As the forum grows, we will have to put some constraints on the size, but that is down the road.

As far as the How To section. I copy every pic and put it in a folder on this website, so when the page is made in the How To Section (not the forum How To topic) the pics will will be as long as this site is here.

If you do run across a post like this, just hit the report button and we will see what we can do about it.

good to know on the how to's.

as for the size limit, i think there might actually be one. I tried to upload a pic, and it said it was too large... but i dont remember how big it was

i just wondered if attaching pictures would be suggested to everybody instead of linking, so that the pics are always there later on, even for non how-to posts.

I think there are two ways to deal with the pictures, maybe three.

    1. Everyone that has a HowTo submission should have a photobucket account and upload all the pictures there.
    2. Host the images ourselves here (bandwidth issues though to say nothing keeping it all organized)
    3. Downloadable documents with the images embedded.

My vision for the How To section was to have the web accessable How To's, that is to say that you could go and pull up a web page and see everything, but also do hard copy write ups that could be downloaded and have the pictures embeded in the documents (you will find all my HowTos this way). That way, for some reason if the web accessible pictures went south, you still have the hard copies.

Furthermore, with the hard copies, one can save them to their hard drive for future reference, to print out in a nice easy to read and follow format, or to share with other people. In addition to that, the hard copy would provide a way for the document to make rounds through out the community to be improved upon and to grow. That point alone is worth all the trouble to me.

good ideas. the other site i frequent turns all of the write ups into PDF's.

i would think that if pictures (weather how to's or not) if limited to 150k-200k would be better to keep them on the site rather than link to photobucket, etc (since photobucket/etc accounts seem to come and go) but maybe i'm not envisioning the ammount of bandwith to do so. -- i just know i hate seeing red X's in posts i want to read.
