Ive looked into this when the suggestion came up before and while I think it is a good idea, it is a difficulty thing to keep in check. I would personally feel uncomfortable without a moderator or admin there in the chat to keep things in chat just in case something got out of hand or unruly.

Its not something that has been abandoned, we just need a way to make sure the community controls stay in place.

Sounds like a good idea, not necessary, but would be a neat addition none the less.

Couldn't we just grant moderator privileges to the people who already moderate the main site?

you can do an IRC. im good with them and can kick/ban at random :P

not to be comparing or anything but gtpworld has chat ON their forums and its really nice to see people in there to chat with.

I really dont think it needs modding since i hope we are all adults here and know when to just leave the chatroom.

I would personally love to see a chat option here. I have thought about the IRC option before but there are many who probably want to participate but would have no idea how to use IRC.

I agree that for the most part all would be good, however, particularly with IRC there is always that 'one' person that wants to stir the pot and for that reason and for the sake and reputation of our community I would feel much better with someone moderating or overseeing the chat sessions.

I could help with it when I'm on. Which for the most part is all the time. I think if we could find 2 or 3 more people, there would be enough tokeep everyone in line for the different time zones of when people would be on.

that was something I had considered. I know there is a chat add on for the forum software but Chance and Chris have been super busy so it would be a matter of whether or not there was any additional cost and how hard and how long it would take to set up. If possible Id like to keep it on the site and within the forum.

Same here, that way we all know we are able to chat with everyone we know and not some random person jumping in and trying to start something. I've had quite a few chats with members on here, but don't like jacking up threads or piling up the pm's.

if you did end up going with a IRC type of chat you could always keep a bot in the room to moderate it (such as eggdrop )

How about we pick three people that know they will usually be on at a certain time. One in the morning one in the afternoon and one late at night. That way it could be monitored 24/7.

And whenever one of those three people arent on the chat room is closed? Don't know if it has that option to do something like that but just throwing out an idea.

FWIW I would be willing and would dedicate time out of my day to do this no problem. Night time would be better for me. Mornings would also work.M-F and sundays

Thats kinda what I was driving for, perhaps enlist the help of a member or two, make them a mod or something like that and task them with keeping the chat room in order.

I believe having a chat room would be a good idea its just a matter of getting everything together and putting everything in place.

Looks like you got you're two people. Now what else do we need to do to make this work?

We have to see what the software will cost, if anything (as I mentioned earlier, I would much rather keep here in the site or in the forum rather than use something external) then get everything together to do the install and update and then make sure everything is stable, then put people in place and then open it up. Its not going to be an overnight thing and I still need to get input from the other admins to what the possibility is that we can do this.

We got some work to do, but I personally like the idea. I liked it the last time it was suggested but there were other things going on and none of the details were really looked at other than I did look closely in doing something external to the site and the more I looked at it the less appealing it became.
