I remember a forum that I used to be on had an online chat room for the users. It would just provide another way of conversing between people. Sometimes I want to talk with someone right there, not wait for posts.

    Just an idea.

    ****Please move to suggestions**** sorry

i think that would be a great idea. especially since it could give people a better way to get info and help faster......we would just have to have some kind of mod in there to keep the idiots away

I talked to Chance about this and here is the only concern...

A chat module is a bandwidth hog, and while the forum can support it right now, in the future when we have alot more users, the chat module would have to be dropped.

Now the question is do we add it for a little bit, and tick some people off when we take it off, or do we just leave it the way it is and that way no one knows what they are missing.

Its a tough call. I would love to have a chat module, but I also know that its going to cost some $$$ in the future as the site grows, and I for one would like to Mod my car...hehe...instead of bankroll bandwidth for a forum.

LOL. I personally would rather be without it. Id rather see some online gatherings using AIM, Yahoo! or any other instant messenger. They are more equipped and built for it than a site chat is.

Id rather conserve the bandwidth for forum use specifically than a chat personally.

Well, there's no doubt it would be used. But in my personal view and opinion you would have to weigh its use vs. the cost to the site in light of tools already available such as AIM, Yahoo! and the like. I have never used a forum chat before, but I use the instant messengers hundreds of times a day

on another forum i frequent, the users asked for a chat, and got it, but it hardly ever gets used.

the other thing to think about is that if problems/issues are solved in chat, and not on the forum (yes i know they could be on aim too) then there isnt a good way to catalog that for others to see later, whereas if it's posts on the forum, others can come back to see that later.

I have an answer to this...

EDIT: GO FURTHER DOWN TO MY NEXT CHAT POST AND CHECK THAT OUT!

Moderators, LMK what you think. Just like IRC, I can assign various levels of "bangsticks" as needed *LOL* Mods can catch me on AIM/YIM with the same screen name.

I'm signing in on the desktop in my house with unccjester2017 (The number might change) to keep a "SuperOwner" in there at all times - it's like IRC, but with more and less functionality all at the same time. I may be gone, so don't expect a response from that name, as I rarely sit at that PC

that may cover the problem of bandwidth, but that still doesnt cover some of the other concerns, such as having someone in there at all times to police the area, nor does it cover potential important information/fixes that won't be cataloged by the board for future reference. (obviously if it was deemed important, a post could be made, but that's assuming that those writing it would realize that it's important information that someone might find useful later)

The object of a chatroom is different than that of a forum. It will always be a seperate entity, so yes, it will be up to someone to write a fix found in talking on a chatroom.

This is a free chat that is wide open - I'm not sure HOW you could expect someone to be in there to police that chat or ANY chat at all times, as the moderators DO have to sleep - and of course there will be trolls that will come into a chat when they know the moderators are not in there, b/c they already have no life and watch for it. *LOL*

This thread is looking for an online chat, and I'm trying to provide, if nothing else, a temp-to-perm solution for that. (Objectively speaking, not trying to be snotty), it's better than nothing, so give it a try.

We already see that a chat attached to the site will be too much of a bandwidth hog once the site grows, so we can all see that it won't really be an option, and we have to deal with the limitations of the leftover options.

What WOULD help the Buzzen chatroom is for everyone to sign up with the exact same screen name as they have on here, so we can all cross-check the website if we don't know someone and know whether or not to ignore them. This is also classified as an unlisted chatroom, so someone would have to type in the exact name of the chatroom by pure chance to even find it without coming here first.

I'm sure everyone appreciates your willingness to put up the chat room and host it for everybody, i just wasnt thinking that it would be well utilized, (and could be a hassle), but maybe it'll be helpful. let's hope it goes well!

Oh yeah, I guess for someone who has not followed along it would appear to be a strange thing. Flynn has a thing about confusing pickles with currency and I like to give him a hard time about it.
