I have a pair of used headlights that have been retrofitted with projectors. The projectors are morimoto minis with clear shrouds that were painted. Both shrouds and inside of housings painted flat black. Front of shrouds were left see through because they have Amber led halos installed behind them. I also have 35watt HID ballasts and wiring harness to go with. Headlights do need resealed. I used butyl rubber on them and one of them didn't hold well, so might use something different. The set up works well and has no damage. I took them off of my car to reseal the one headlight but have ended trading off my car before reinstalling them. So, all the hard work is done.
