    I just bought a 2001 Grand Prix with 242,000 miles on it and the transmission was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. When you get on it starts like pulsing like its miss firing but no engine light is on. Any suggestions?

    Get your hands dirty, start checking regular stuff.

    Check vacuum lines, spark plug condition, clean throttle body and MAF sensor, fuel system cleaner etc etc.

    All I can really say without having the vehicle in front of me.

    Put a vacuum gauge on it and check the readings, auto repair books give good descriptions on what reading s should be and potential problems, also pull and check the spark plugs and check the plug wires.

    I have checked plugs and wires, they are fine. Maf sensor has been cleaned, it just won't run right through 2-3k. Other people have seem to have had the same problems, any tips on how to check the cat and fuel filter?

    I know this sounds like a stupid question but does the MIL work? It should come on when you turn the key to the on position. If it doesn't work the bulb could have burned out. Take the car to Autozone or Oriellys and have them scan for codes.
    If your MIL does work I doubt you have a bad cat, because it would set the code P0420 for sure, and possibly the code P0300. Also when the car is doing its surging the MIL would flash at you.
    Fuel filter could cause this problem and not set a the MIL, but when mine was plugged I got a flashing MIL, and the car would just fall flat on its face. Its a $12 part, so changing it won't hurt anything.

    MIL = SES = CEL = SVS.

    All stand for check engine light.

    What brand plugs are currently in the car??

    Swap the ICM (ignition control module) with another 3800 powered car if you can to test that out and perhaps rule that out.

    i got a flashing check engine light and had surging issues because my #6 spark plug wire was broke right at the boot and there was no way to know it was half broke untill the last time i took it off to replace the wires and separated the wire from the boot and the boot stayed on the plug. now i have no more problems

    Also the ABS light is on all the time along with traction control, took it to o Reilly's and had them scan it and all that popped up was a right wheel speed sensor

    do a tune up, oil change, coolant flush. all stuff that should be done when you buy a new used car.

    if the tranny fluid is still red to pink, do a pan drop and filter change too.

    time to make your own service records.

    You can try and disconnect the plug where it connects to the hub and clean out both ends and put a little dielectric grease in it and see if it goes away. If not then you either have a harness issue or the hub itself needs to be replaced as it is all one piece. If you replace the hub bearing assembly get a good one (Timkin, SKF are common).
